Cal-Washington State Postgame Quotes
Opening Statement:
"Obviously, a tough one tonight. I felt like offensively we did some really good things and it was good to see Justice get back into form, hitting shots, playing with confidence, and looking like what he was like at the beginning of conference play. At the end of the day, turnovers cost us the game. I thought we did a decent job. We were dialed in defensively and knew what they wanted to do. We did a good job of taking away the three -- they hit nine -- but a team like this could go off for a lot more than that. We outrebounded them, we hit the offensive glass and we had 17 assists to 29 makes. You shoot 54 percent from the field in the second half and 60 from three. I'm looking at the stat sheet and I'm confused but at the end of the day we came out playing well then we had a period in the middle of the second half where they went on a run. We just had absolutely no energy, and we can't afford to not play 40 minutes of basketball. I think that's what cost us. As opposed to going in the locker room at home up six, we were down two."
Â
Thoughts on the game's final possessions:
"We wanted the ball in Justice's hands and it ended up getting in his hands, where he found Marcus on the baseline for a bucket. The problem was that Washington State got it in-bounds right away and were able to in the scramble of things sprint right down the middle for a make."
Â
Thoughts on Roman Davis' night:
"This is exactly what he's done in practice. Being able to shoot it, get into the paint, be aggressive and make the right decisions defensively, while also displaying a lot of energy and activity on the defensive end."
Â
Â
On the last play of the game:
"I'm not too sure (what happened). It was pretty much a lack of focus toward the end of the game when we needed it the most. We weren't communicating well enough and somehow Bernstein got open for a wide-open layup. We'll look over it, but that game should have been ours. It should have been our game. Going into it we knew we were the better team. Before the last possession, there was a lot of lack of focus that led to that situation that we should have not been in. We're getting better every game, and we've improved a lot since the beginning of the season, which I think is great thing moving forward. But today we really needed this one, and unfortunately we couldn't come through."
Â
On the intended set play for the last play of the game:
"I think originally we were going for an Iso then a post-up to
Marcus Lee, but I just ended up coming up because the play got broken, and I just drove and pitched off to him for a layup. But then we didn't get back on defense. We were supposed to be man-to-man in that last possession."
Â
On his play today:
"The past couple games, I've been having a little trouble getting my shot off and making shots, but today I felt like I could feel my arms much better. Pushups really came in handy before -- for pregame warmup -- and I'm just glad that I got my rhythm back, but it wasn't enough to get the win today."
Â
Â
California Sophomore Forward Roman Davis:
On his play today:
"Fortunately, shots were falling for me. Coach believed in me and trusted in me, and believed I could help the team win. Sadly, like Justice said, we couldn't rise together and get the stop that we needed, but it was all Coach putting trust in me and letting me do my thing on the floor to help the team."
Â
On ability to bring team back into the game in final minutes:
"Honestly, I wasn't really doing too much thinking, I was hooping and making plays. I wanted to see my team win so bad."
