Cal-Washington Postgame Quotes

California Head Coach Wyking Jones

Opening Statement:
"I was happy with how we played in the first half. I thought defensively we were solid and did some good things. Offensively there was flow, pace, we wanted to work inside-out and felt like we were able to do that. In the second half, I thought foul trouble completely took away our flow. I had some lineups out there today that I thought I would never have to play but did because of foul trouble. Ultimately, it was foul trouble along with 50-50 balls and loose balls. We had just as much opportunity to get them as they did, but they beat us to a lot of 50-50 balls. At the end of the day, we lost to a very good basketball team."

On emotions on Senior Day at Haas Pavilion:
"I still get to be with these guys. We have practice on Monday so for me it's not done. The work is not done. It's their last home game but I'll see Marcus, Nick, King, Cole and Derek on Monday ready to practice at noon. For me, it doesn't affect me right now but when I coach them for their last game then I'll feel that. Right now we still have some work to do."

On what Washington did to take away Darius McNeill's scoring in the second half:
"Once Marcus and King got into foul trouble then I felt like their defensive focus was on Darius, Don and Justice. The two guys who could hurt us inside are out of the game so they could focus on making sure the perimeter was tight, take away the driving lines and get over ball screens. Half of our attack was gone at that point, so they were able to focus in on the other guys."

California Senior Forward Marcus Lee

On emotions of today:
"I felt a lot of things, especially walking out with my family. I tried to be strong, but you saw the tears flowing. As the game went on, you kind of realize that senior night is not for the seniors. It's for passing the baton on to the freshmen. It's about understanding that even though this year didn't go as well as we planned, understand that 'We're building a cathedral,' in Coach O'Toole's words. We're building for people that are coming after us, and that's what really got to me today, and that's what really stayed on my mind and got me really emotional. It was knowing that my job is to make sure they (the freshmen) are alright, make sure the freshman keep pushing and keep getting better.

On Washington changes in the second half:
"We got into foul trouble really early in the second half, which really hurt us. King had to sit for most of the second half, and I had to sit for most of the second half and ended up fouling out. The dynamic we had going, putting players in that weren't used to playing with each other, and then Washington really took advantage of us being in foul trouble."

California Freshman Guard Darius McNeill

On Washington defense against McNeill in the second half:
"It was just me not being as aggressive as I was in the first half. It really wasn't them, it was me not being as aggressive as I was in the first half."

On his strong first half:
"I was being aggressive, and then everything opened up. I was doing what the defense was giving to me."

On freshman three-point record:
"I wasn't really aware of that, but if I do end up passing it, it would be a great achievement for the team. Right now, I'm just focusing on helping the team get better for the rest of the season."

On freshmen progress in second half of season:
"We see that we also have to bring more to the table to help the team. We know the seniors have to bring it, but we also have to help contribute too. That's what coach kept telling us, and so we all knew that everyone would have to pitch in and just bring everything they can to the table."
