BERKELEY – A familiar face will be taking the helm of the Cal men's rowing program as associate head coach
Scott Frandsen has agreed to succeed
Mike Teti as head coach of the Golden Bears following the conclusion of the 2017-18 season. Frandsen, a 2002 graduate of the Haas School of Business and three-time national champion as a student-athlete at Cal, will become the 16
th different head coach in program history, replacing Teti, who takes over head coaching duties for the U.S. Men's National Team in June after the conclusion of the IRA National Championship Regatta.
"I'm excited for Cal men's rowing that
Scott Frandsen has agreed to become our new head coach after this season," said Director of Athletics
Jim Knowlton. "He is a proud Cal alum with a long history of success as both a rower and a coach, and I'm confident that he will continue the tradition of excellence that is a hallmark of our program."
A three-time Olympian, Frandsen has been a member of Cal's coaching staff since 2012, helping the Bears to a record of excellence both on the water and in the classroom. Cal has finished in the top five in both the varsity eight and junior varsity eights at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) championships in every season under Frandsen's tenure, and won the Varsity Challenge Cup in 2016. The Bears also claimed the Pac-12 Championship in 2016 and have had success at the Henley Royal Regatta, winning the Ladies' Plate in 2014 and the Visitors' Cup in 2015.
"I am honored and excited to be named the next head coach for Cal Men's Rowing," said Frandsen. "This program had a huge impact on my life and I look forward to continuing to facilitate that challenging, formative experience for student-athletes to pursue excellence on the water and in the classroom.
"I'd like to thank Andy Rogers and the Rogers family; we simply do not have the team that we do without their support," Frandsen added. "We will continue to honor the legacy of TGR and strive to cement Cal Men's Rowing as the premier collegiate rowing program in the world. Also, a heartfelt thank you to
Mike Teti who brought me down here six years ago to coach alongside him and has been immensely supportive in helping to prepare me for this role.
"Through this process, the support from all of the different generations of alumni has been overwhelming," said Frandsen. "I'm honored to be chosen to lead the team into the next chapter of our history. Mike and I remain focused on finishing the season with a successful IRAs."
A native of Kelowna, British Columbia, Frandsen is one of the most decorated oarsman in Cal rowing history. Frandsen helped Cal's varsity eight to three consecutive IRA championships from 2000-02, including a pair of undefeated seasons in 2000 and 2001. The Golden Bear captain also guided Cal to the three straight Pac-10 titles in the men's eight and was honored as a first-team All-Pac-10 selection as a senior.
A two-time Pac-10 All-Academic honoree, Frandsen graduated from the Haas School of Business in 2002 with a degree in business administration and went on to complete a master's degree in Psychological Research at Oxford University. While at Oxford, Frandsen competed in the Blue Boat in that won the tightly contested 2003 Oxford/Cambridge Boat Race and served as a volunteer coach for the University College eights.
Frandsen then put together a decorated career on the international stage, racing in three Olympics and five World Championships. After helping Canada to a fifth-place finish in the eight at the 2004 Summer Olympics, Frandsen won silver in the pair at the 2008 games in Beijing, Canada's first medal in the event in over 40 years. Frandsen raced in the pair again in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, charting a sixth-place finish. A two-time Canadian champion in the pair, Frandsen claimed seven medals at World Cup regattas, including three golds in the eight and a gold in the pair.
"I don't believe there is anyone more prepared to lead the Cal Men's Rowing program than
Scott Frandsen," said Teti, who will lead the USRowing Men's National Team after the 2018 IRA Championships. "Over the past six years, Scott has coached our Crews to multiple national championships, helped our squad set a record in team GPA each of the last three years, created a mentorship program for our student-athletes, and assisted in improving our recruiting and fundraising capabilities. As an athlete, Scott was a relentless competitor winning three National Championships as a Golden Bear, winning the prestigious "Boat Race" while at Oxford, and achieving a Silver medal in the Men's Pair for Canada at the Beijing Olympics. Scott will bring this same competitive spirit as the head coach and there is no doubt that he bleeds California Blue!"
"Cal has made a great decision in hiring Scott and I am confident he will lead California Crew to unprecedented success for many years to come," added Teti. "On a personal note, I want to thank Scott for all his help and advice during my tenure but most importantly his friendship. I am so happy for Scott, Tannis, and Owen and offer my unwavering support."
Frandsen and his wife, Tannis, live in Berkeley and have one son, Owen.
