Trio of Bears Earn Conference Honors
BERKELEY – As California sits on the bubble for a postseason bid and awaits its fate during a bye-week, the team received some positive news on Wednesday as the Pac-12 announced that a trio of Golden Bears were selected for a couple of league honors.
Seniors
Lindsay Rood and
Kamalani Dung were named to the All-Pac-12 list, while freshman
Makena Smith was an All-Freshman honoree.
"All three of these players are well deserving," said head coach
Diane Ninemire. "Lindsay's had a phenomenal season and has been great at the plate all season. Kama has picked up some big wins for us and has had a real fire for us in the circle this year.
"I think Makena shined as a freshman, being steady at the plate and producing great RBIs and defensive skills behind the plate."
Rood, who entered this week co-leading the nation with 78 hits and topping the Pac-12 with 30 stolen bases, picked up her second consecutive first team honor. The Danville, Calif., resident, went perfect this season in stolen base attempts, and is the only player nationally with at least 30 stolen bases who has never been caught.
Cal's co-ace Dung, who was named to the second team, at this point is the only pitcher to shutout the No. 6 Arizona Wildcats, giving up just two hits in the 1-0 win in Cal's first win over UA since 2016. She is the first pitcher in the program to shutout the Wildcats since 2012 when Jolene Henderson did so in a 2-0 victory. The Waianae, Hawaii native currently holds a 2.32 ERA, which ranks eighth in the league.
Smith proves to be a bright spot in the future for the Bears topping the team with 37 RBI and finishing with a notable .315 batting average, the third highest for the Bears. She added five homers to the ledger this season, two of them which came recently in consecutive games at Arizona State when the Murrieta, Calif., native blasted a pair of two-run shots through left center.
The freshman has also been a defensive stalwart for the Bears behind the plate and at first base.
The Bears finished the season 28-27 overall and 5-18 in conference. Currently sitting in 64th in the RPI, Cal will learn of its postseason destiny on Sunday at 6 p.m. (ET) during the NCAA Softball Selection Show on ESPN 2.
