SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The No. 3 ranked University of California women's water polo team (9-2) captured the 2000 Santa Barbara Women's Open Tournament Sunday, upsetting No. 2 ranked USC, 9-8, in the semifinals and then defeating Bay Area rival Stanford, 8-7 in overtime, in the title match.
Cal finished the tournament 4-0, defeating Occidental 16-1 and UC Santa Barbara, 9-4, in the first day of the competition.
In the Bears win over USC, Cal was led by three goals from sophomore Julia Cesnik, and two goals apiece by senior Colette Glinkowski and sophomore Breena Fleener. Senior Brook Spittler and sophomore Cristen Razzari also tallied goals for the Bears. Cal had a 4-2 lead at halftime against the Trojans and upped its lead to 7-4 after three quarters. The Bears were able to hold on for the victory despite being outscored, 4-2, in the final period.
Against Stanford, Cal was again led by three goals from Cesnik. Glinkowski and senior Kaliya Young added two goals apiece and sophomore Julie Arnold also scored for the Bears. Cal had a 5-3 advantage at halftime, but was outscored 3-1 in the third period. Neither team scored in the fourth period to send the match into overtime with a 6-6 tie. Finally, the Bears were able to top the Cardinal, 2-1 in overtime for the tournament championship.
Earlier this season, the Bears had lost to UCLA, 6-5, in the championship match of the UC San Diego Tournament. Cal will next host UC Davis, Friday, Mar. 3 at 4 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
