Bears Fall To Washington State
PULLMAN, Wash. – Senior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise registered 13 kills at a blistering .524 hitting percentage but the Cal volleyball team fell at Washington State on Friday night, 25-23, 25-16, 25-21 at Bohler Gym.
Senior opposite hitter Lara Vukasovic added eight kills for the Bears (9-17, 3-12 Pac-12) while junior middle blocker Jenelle Jordan added seven kills and two blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Christine Alftin also had seven kill.
The first set was close throughout. But with the score tied at 20-20, the Cougars scored two in a row. The teams then traded points until Washington State closed it out.
The first half of the second set was also close. It was tied at 13-13 and the Bears still only trailed 16-14 moments later. With the Cougars leading 17-15, Washington St. scored three in a row to take command.
The Cougars broke the third set open early. They extended to a 17-10 lead before chipping away to cut it to 23-19. But the teams once again exchanged points and Washington St. finished off the match.
Junior libero Maddy Kerr led the Bears' defensive efforts with 12 digs.
Schonewise, who entered the night ranked fifth in the Pac-12 in hitting percentage, improved her overall mark to .378 for the season. It marked the sixth time this season she has hit .500 or better.
Cal will return to the court Sunday at No. 3 Washington. The match begins at 2:30 p.m. and will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
