SAN FRANCISCO – Following an NCAA-best 43-point performance against Sacramento State, California freshman forward Kristine Anigwe was voted this week's Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday. Oregon's Jillian Alleyne is the Player of the Week.
This is Anigwe's second consecutive weekly award, and her third in four weeks. Anigwe is the only Golden Bear to be voted Freshman of the Week more than twice since the Pac-12 began sponsoring the award in 2012-13.
The Phoenix, Ariz., product turned in big numbers across the board during the Cal Classic presented by Four Points Sheraton to average a double-double for the second weekend in a row. Her week was highlighted by a 43-point performance – the most of any player in the NCAA this season -- in the Cal Classic consolation game against Sacramento State. She set a tournament record for points, besting the previous record of 38, which was set in 1980, and became the first Golden Bear to score 40 or more points since Reshanda Gray's 43 against Washington State in 2014. Anigwe was just four points shy of the Cal all-time record of 47.
Anigwe's 43-point total helped Cal break the program's all-time single-game high, upping it from 115 against USC in 1989 to 117. She also notched 12 rebounds in the game, marking her second consecutive double-double and third in five games after putting up a then-career-high 27 points and 12 boards against Saint Mary's on Saturday. Her 18 made field goals are also a new Cal Classic tournament record.
The rookies was voted to the Cal Classic All-Tournament Team, finishing the weekend by averaging 35 points per game and 12 rebounds per game. She shot 64 percent for the weekend (29-45).
The Golden Bears continue a five-game December homestand this Saturday against Nebraska at 5 p.m. The game is the second of the day in Haas Pavilion, as Cal men's basketball takes on Saint Mary's at noon in what is the first of two doubleheader days this season.
