Blue Team Walks Off To Begin Blue-Gold Series

BERKELEY – A three-run rally in the bottom of the eighth ended with Tyrus Greene singling in Jeffrey Mitchell, Jr. as the Blue squad edged the Gold team 6-5 to win game one of the Blue and Gold Series on a chilly November night at Evans Diamond.

Trailing 5-3 entering the final frame of the eight-inning contest, the Blue team got its final rally started with a double by freshman Andrew Vaughn. Tanner Dodson, who started on the mound and stayed in to hit later in the game, singled to bring in Vaughn and make it 5-4.

After Denis Karas robbed Matt Ruff of a hit with a diving play at third and a strikeout brought the second out, Greene got his chance to play hero and lined a shot into right-center to plate the winning run.

Greene's game-winner made a winner out of freshman Jack Wolger, who got the final two outs of the eighth inning for the Blue squad. Dodson pitched the first four for team Blue and allowed two runs on six hits. He also struck out two and didn't walk anyone. Jack Cosca, Akaash Agarwal and Lorenzo Hampton also pitched for the Blue team.

On the Gold side, right-hander Joey Matulovich spun an impressive four innings in a starting role, allowing just one hit and an unearned run while striking out two and walking one. Arman Sabouri and Ian Lutz also pitched for the Gold squad.

Offensively, Jonah Davis, Ripken Reyes and Denis Karas led the way for the Gold team. Davis went 2 for 4 with a two-run home run and an RBI double while Reyes went 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored and Karas went 2 for 4 with a solo home run and a walk. Five different Blue team members drove in a run, led by Austen Swift with a two-run double. Mitchell and Greene each had two hits in the win.

The Blue and Gold Series resumes Friday at 2:30 p.m. with Jared Horn and Matt Ladrech scheduled to take the ball. After taking Saturday off for the 119th Big Game, the Bears return to Evans Diamond on Sunday with Zayne Patino and Rogelio Reyes the projected starters.
