Berkeley—The California cross country teams are headed to the NCAA Championship the NCAA announced Saturday. The women's team received an at-large bid, and two men, seniors Trent Brendel and Garrett Corcoran, received individual berths to the meet.
The women received an at-large bid after tying for the fourth-best NCAA West Regional Finish in program history as they took fifth at yesterday's meet. Their full season performance was another reason for inclusion in the NCAA Tournament field as they took seventh place at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational, and recorded a 15th-place finish at the Nuttycombe Invitational. The Bears notched their highest Pac-12 finish since 2010 as they took 5th.
The women's team is led by senior Bethan Knights and freshman Brie Oakley. Knights finished 10th at the NCAA West Regionals while Oakley was the top freshman finisher in the field as she crossed the line in 11th.
Trent Brendel and Garrett Corcoran, who will both run as individuals in the national championship meet, will represent the men. Brendel and Corcoran have both had stellar seasons, including top-15 finishes at both Pac-12 Championships and NCAA West Regionals.
The National Championship meet will be hosted by the University of Lousiville, and ran at the famous E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Lousiville, Kentucky this upcoming Saturday. Times for the races will be released later in the week.
