BERKELEY – Cal senior opposite hitter Antzela Dempi was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 First Team on Thursday.
Dempi, a business administration major in the Haas School of Business, has a cumulative GPA of 3.84 during her academic career at Cal. She has won the Golden Bear Award for having the top GPA on the team in each of the past two years.
Dempi is one of just seven student-athletes picked to the All-District 8 Team and just three from the Pac-12. District 8 covers Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Canada.
With her First Team selection, Dempi is now placed on the ballot for the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team. She is the sixth Cal volleyball student-athlete to receive an All-District honor, which started recognition in 1998 by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a starter or "important reserve" with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and play in at least 50 percent of her team's competitions. Freshmen and first-year transfers are ineligible.
Dempi has had a breakout season on the court as a senior. She leads the Pac-12 at 0.49 aces per set and ranks 10th in the conference at 3.77 points per set. Her 47 aces this season are tied for eighth on Cal's all-time single-season aces list. Dempi also leads the Bears at 2.99 kills per set.
Cal has four matches remaining in the regular season, all at home. The Bears host No. 14 USC on Friday night at 6 p.m.
