BERKELEY – The Cal men's swimming team will bring its 2017 fall season to a close and look to set the stage for 2018 with its annual cross-country trip as the Bears head to the Georgia Fall Invitational from Dec. 1-3 for their first three-day meet of the season.

Cal closes out 2017 with a good start to the season already in progress. The Bears' versatility and depth has stood out over the course of the fall with standout swims at Cal Poly, the USA College Challenge and the annual Triple Distance Meet vs. Stanford.

Last time out, Cal earned wins in five of six events and took both relays when the Cardinal visited Spieker Aquatics Complex on Nov. 10. With event winners determined by cumulative times in three distances of the same stroke, Zheng Wen Quah (fly), Andrew Seliskar (breast), Michael Jensen (sprint free), Daniel Carr (back) and Mike Thomas (IM) all claimed victories on the afternoon.

LAST YEAR
Three days in Athens ended with Cal claiming the team title as the Bears scored 859 points to easily outdistance second-place Georgia, which finished with 710. Ryan Murphy swept the backstroke events and Cal thrived in the relays, wrapping up the weekend with a win by Murphy, Jensen, Justin Lynch and Seliskar in the 400 free relay.

DIVING IN
The Cal diving team brought its calendar year to a close on Nov. 17-19 at the Lumberjack Diving Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona. Sophomore Connor Callahan led the Bears as he finished second on platform, third on 1-meter and third on 3-meter. Freshmen Johnny Robinson and Jackson Gabler also competed in Flagstaff with Robinson earning his Zone qualifying score on the 3-meter. Head coach Derek Starks' crew will return to action from Jan. 12-14 at the UCLA Diving Invitational in Los Angeles.

PAC-12 EDGES TEAM USA
A group of seven Cal swimmers – Matthew Josa, Connor Hoppe, Justin Lynch, Andrew Seliskar, Michael Jensen, Zheng Wen Quah and Sean Grieshop – helped a Pac-12 team coached on the men's side by David Durden earn a 326.5-286.5 win over Team USA in the two-day USA College Challenge hosted by USC. While the collegiate team earned the overall victory, Cal pro star and Olympic gold medalist Tom Shields was a force for Team USA as he earned wins in the 100 and 200 free as well as the 100 and 200 fly.

DUAL ACTION
Two dual meets in two days in two different time zones led to two Cal wins with a 158.-100.5 victory at Pacific and a 188.5-111.5 results at Utah. In Stockton, five Bears – Ken Takahashi, Jack Xie, Andy Song, Matt Whittle and Ryan Kao – won two events apiece to lead a day in which Cal swimmers claimed 11 individual event victories. The next day, Cal's contingent in Utah claimed 12 events, including both relays, to take another good step forward in the Bears' fall training program.

NEXT UP
Cal's next competition will come in home waters as the Bears host their annual Cal Invitational all-comers meet on Jan. 13 and 14. Dual meet competition resumes on Jan. 19 and 20 when Arizona State and Arizona pay a visit to Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal travels to USC for a Feb. 2 dual meet and wraps up the dual season on Feb. 17 at home against Stanford.
