BERKELEY – The post season honors continue to roll in for the Golden Bears with three members earning recognition on the United Soccer Coaches NCAA All-Far West Region Team, the organization announced recently.
California's junior goalkeeper Drake Callender (Fair Oaks, Calif.) and senior midfielder Jose-Carrera Garcia (Ontario, Calif.) were named to the first team, while junior forward Shinya Kadono (Irvine, Calif.) was listed as a second team honoree.
Callender, who led the Pac-12 in saves (71) to conclude the regular season, picks up the first postseason honor of his career after finishing with a 79.0 save percentage and 10-7 record. Teammate and captain Carrera-Garcia also topped the Pac-12 with nine assists before the team headed into the playoffs for the first time since 2014. JCG also added four goals to conclude a stellar career with the Bears.
Kadono had a breakout season as he led the Bears with a career-high seven goals. The potent scorer, along with both Callender and Carrera-Garcia, picked up a Pac-12 Player of the Week honor to round out a noteworthy season.
The Bears concluded the season with an 11-7-0 overall showing, earning the 12th playoff appearance under 18-year head coach Kevin Grimes. The Bears finished with a 6-4-0 conference record and as the league's runners-up, the best finish since 2010 when Cal won the title.
