PROVO, Utah – In the team's second meet in five days, California women's gymnastics fell at BYU, 196.025-194.350, Friday night in Smith Fieldhouse.
Alma Kuc won her first collegiate uneven bars title with a 9.85.
Toni-Ann Williams was second all-around with a season-high 39.050, and Kyana George went 38.550 all-around. Both gymnasts competed in all four events for the second time this week.
Cal got off to a slow start after misses on bars led to a 47.925 – the program's first sub-48.0 score on bars since Jan. 15, 2016, when the Bears went 47.975 on the event at Oklahoma. A major bright spot on the event was Kuc, who earned the first event title of her collegiate career to share the bars win with BYU's Shannon Evans with a 9.85. Kuc has been consistent on the event through her first two meets, averaging a 9.8625 thus far.
The Bears gained some ground on vault, improving their season-high vault total by three-tenths from 48.600 at Stanford on Monday to 48.900 tonight in Provo. Arianna Robinson's Piked Ilg led the Cal rotation at 9.825 with her unique front entry skill capped off by a landing stuck cold. She shared second on the event. Cassidy Keelen, who was held out of several events on Monday after feeling under the weather, made her season vault debut with a strong 9.80.
After two rotations, Cal's uncharacteristic mistakes left the Bears trailing the Cougars 97.675- 96.825.
On floor, Sofie Seilnacht led the Bears off with a strong 9.825, the second-highest Bear floor total of the evening behind George's career-high 9.875, good for third on the event. In just her second collegiate floor routine, Yuleen Sternberg turned in a 9.725 in the anchor spot. Cal combined for a 48.725, but the mark wasn't enough to push the Bears within striking distance of BYU.
Cal capped off the meet on beam, its second-best rotation of the day with a 48.800. Williams anchored the event and led the Bears with a 9.875, while two other Bears scored above a 9.80. Keelen continued a strong night with a 9.80, and Chelsea Shu led off with a 9.825. Williams took second for her 9.875.
The Golden Bears remain on the road for the third of four consecutive meets away from Haas Pavilion. Next up is a dual meet at Washington on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 12:30 p.m. The meet airs live from Seatlle on Pac-12 Networks.
