The Google Cloud Academic All-District® Women's Soccer Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
An applied mathematics major with an intended minor in data science, Smith boasts a 4.00 GPA and is one of only two sophomores named to First Team for District 8, which encompasses the majority of the west coast. Smith has been a mainstay on the Bears backline, appearing in 36 matches and making 35 starts during her first two seasons in Berkeley. A United Soccer Coaches' All-District selection as a rookie, Smith helped captain the Bears for the 2018 season. As a First-team Academic All-District® honoree, Smith now advances to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December.
Fong, a junior forward from Belmont, California, collects Academic All-District honors for the second consecutive year, after earning First Team recognition in 2017. A Business Administration major and Pac-12 All-Academic honoree in 2017, Fong has a 3.76 GPA and also flourished on the field this season, setting a new career best with three goals on the year. Fong is joined on the Second Team by Cleverley, an Environmental Economics and Policy Major with 3.74 GPA. Cleverley is a member of the New Zealand women's national team and tallied a pair of assists for the Bears this season as a defensive midfielder, marking her successful return from injury at the end of the 2017 season.
The All-District recognition continues a stretch of fantastic academic performances for the Golden Bears. Earlier this fall, Cal was awarded the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the fifth consecutive season. The Golden Bears posted a cumulative GPA of 3.386 over the course of the 2017-18 school year, the team's highest in the last 11 years and the second-highest by any large women's sports team at Cal over the last school year. Cal's 2017-18 freshman class had an exceptional first year on campus, combining for a GPA well above 3.500.
