Murphy Completes Backstroke Sweep At Nationals
IRVINE, Calif. - A win in the 100-meter backstroke wrapped up a sweep of the stroke for Cal men's swimming star
Ryan Murphy as he picked up his third victory to finish a highly successful stretch of swimming at the Phillips 66 National Championships.
After getting started with a win in the 200 back, Murphy added a 50 title on Friday while setting an American record in the process. That left only the 100, an event he set the world record in at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and a solid morning swim sent him to Saturday evening competition as the No. 2 seed.
Swimming in lane five, Murphy followed the same blueprint as his 50 victory, bolting off the blocks with a field-best reaction time of 0.49 seconds. He swam the first 50 meters in 25.15 seconds, five-hundreths faster than fellow American backstroke star Matt Grevers in lane four. He came home in 27.36 and stretched to the wall with a time of 52.51 that was a razor-thin margin of four-hundreths faster than Grevers in second.
The 100 back served as another example of what has been a tremendous week for Cal swimmers. Murphy was joined in the A final by fellow Golden Bears Jacob Pebley,
Bryce Mefford and
Daniel Carr with Mefford taking fourth, Pebley fifth and Carr seventh. Sophomore
Sean Grieshop swam the B final of the 400 free while Josh Prenot made the A final of the 100 breast and placed seventh. A trio of swimmers with Cal ties made their mark in the B final of the 100 breast with recent grad
Connor Hoppe winning the heat, incoming freshman Reece Whitley taking second and postgrad Chuck Katis placing eighth. Senior
Carson Sand swam the evening session as well, taking part in the C final.
Action wraps up in Irvine on Sunday with the 200 IM, 800 free and 50 free. Live streaming of the prelims will be available through USASwimming.org and the evening session will be broadcast by the Olympic Channel and streamed live on NBCSports.com.
