Cal Earns Academic Recognition

BOSTON, Massachusetts – Six members of the Cal men's rowing team have earned IRA All-Academic honors, the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Board of Stewards announced recently. Maarten Hurkmans, Martin Mackovic, Ferdinand Querfeld, Christoph Seifriedsberger, Joachim Sutton, and Natan Wegrzycki-Szymczyk were all recognized for their excellence in the classroom as the Intercollegiate Rowing Association awarded academic honors for the sixth consecutive year.

To qualify for the All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.35 or higher, completed one full year at their institution, be an institutional letter winner and have competed at the 2018 IRA National Championship Regatta.

The full list of IRA All-Academic honorees can be found here.

Wegrzycki-Szymczyk, the 2018 Pac-12 Men's Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year, earned IRA All-Academic honors for the third consecutive season while rising seniors Hurkmans and Querfeld were also named to the All-Academic team in 2017. Mackovic, Seifriedsberger, and Sutton are first-time honorees.

All six Bears earned Pac-12 All-Academic recognition earlier this spring. Wegrzycki-Szymczyk headlined the first team, Hurkmans and Querfeld were named to the second team, and Mackovic, Seifriedsberger, and Sutton earned honorable mention recognition.
