Moffat Wins Gold, Four Bears Medal At 2018 World Rowing Championships

PLOVDIV, Bulgaria – The 2018 World Rowing Championships ended in victorious fashion on Sunday in Plvodiv, Bulgaria, with Cal senior Dana Moffat winning a world title with the United States' eight. An All-American, two-time NCAA Champion, and now World Champion, Moffat was one of four Golden Bears to medal at the premier event on the international rowing calendar. Fellow senior Sydney Payne won silver in the Canadian eight while the Australian eight led by Rosie Popa '14 and Jacinta Edmunds '16 claimed bronze with a third-place finish.

The U.S. and Australian eights advanced directly to the A Final after posting the fastest times in their respective heats on Wednesday, while the Canadian eight progressed through the repechage. Sunday's final saw Australia get out to a strong start, leading the field after 500 meters. However, the United States' soon surged ahead and claimed the lead at the halfway mark, continuing to lead the pack through the finish line. The Canadian eight made its move over the final 1,000 meters and passed the Australian boat to finish second with the silver. The gold in the eight marks the 12th world title for the United States in this event in the last 13 years.

Kara Kohler '14 also reached the A Final, racing for the United States in the single sculls. Racing at the World Championships for the second consecutive year, Kohler used a strong performance over the final 1,000 meters to take fourth, less than a second out of third place.

Kohler was coached in the sculls by former Golden Bear standout and Cal Athletics Hall of Famer Laurel Korholz, who also coached the United States to gold in the women's four.

Rowan McKellar '17 won the B Final in the Great Britain pair, capping off a successful summer of racing that included a bronze medal at the World Rowing Cup II. Classmate Inger Kavlie '17 also competed at the World Championships, racing for Norway in the quad sculls.
