Four Pro Bears On Super Bowl LIII Rosters
Los Angeles Rams’ Jared Goff And C.J. Anderson To Face New England Team With Stephen Anderson And Brian Schwenke
Four former Cal players that completed their collegiate eligibility with the Golden Bears are on rosters of the two teams playing in Super Bowl LIII at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Sunday, February 3 (3:30 pm, CBS). Jared Goff and C.J. Anderson of the Los Angeles Rams punched their ticket to the contest with a thrilling 26-23 overtime road victory at New Orleans in the NFC Championship Game. A New England team with Stephen Anderson and
Brian Schwenke on the roster was also a road overtime winner, 37-31, at Kansas City in the AFC Championship Game.
Cal has now had at least one player on a Super Bowl roster 18 of the last 19 seasons and each of the past six.
Goff completed 25-of-40 passes for 297 yards with one touchdown and one interception while adding three rushes for 10 yards. He led the Rams on four scoring drives of 57 yards or more after the Saints led 13-0 after the first quarter. The Rams' only lead in the contest came on a game-winning 57-yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein in overtime.
Goff is poised to give Cal more different starting Super Bowl quarterbacks than any school in the game's history when he becomes the fourth former Golden Bears' signal-caller to complete his collegiate eligibility at Cal to start the contest. Cal is currently one of four schools to have three along with Alabama, Notre Dame and Purdue. The other Cal quarterbacks to have started the game are Joe Kapp (Minnesota, IV), Craig Morton (Dallas, V; Denver, XII) and Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay, XLV). Vince Ferragamo, who played at Cal before transferring to Nebraska, was also the starter for the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl XIV.
C.J. Anderson was the leading rusher in the NFC Championship Game with 16 carries for 44 yards while adding one reception for five yards. Anderson, who signed Dec. 18 with the Rams after being released by three teams in less than nine months, is the only one of the four former Golden Bears with previous Super Bowl experience. Anderson played for the winning Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50.
Stephen Anderson (gameday inactive) and Schwenke (injured reserve) did not play in the AFC Championship Game for New England.
Two other former Cal players participated in Sunday's conference championship games.
Cameron Jordan had three tackles, 1.0 sack (-8 yards), 1.0 tackle for loss and one quarterback hit for the Saints, while
Mitchell Schwartz was the starting right tackle for the Chiefs.
Two others – Raymond Davison (Kansas City practice squad) and Daniel Lasco (New Orleans physically unable to perform list) were associated with teams in Sunday's championship games.
A total of 19 former Cal players that completed their collegiate eligibility at Cal ended the 2018 NFL regular season on active rosters while 33 were affiliated with NFL teams including six on injured reserve, one on a physically unable to perform list, three on practice squads and four on coaching staffs.
