INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – For the third straight year, California beat Purdue in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge, with the 31st-ranked Golden Bears shutting out the Boilermakers, 4-0, on Friday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Cal junior Bjorn Hoffmann clinched the victory with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Maksymilian Raupuk.
 
Cal improved to 7-5 after the nonconference match, while Purdue fell to 5-6.
 
The fourth-seeded Bears – the tournament's defending champions – will next play in the semifinal round on Saturday at 2 p.m. against top-seeded//sixth-ranked Baylor.
 
Against Purdue, Cal's nationally ranked doubles teams both won to collect the doubles point. First the 33rd-ranked Paul Barretto and Can Kaya knocked off Raupuk and Mateo Julio, 6-1, on court two, and then the 11th-ranked Jacob Brumm and Yuta Kikuchi topped Athell Bennett and Stephan Koenigsfest, 6-4, on court one to secure Cal's 1-0 lead.
 
Later, the Bears got singles wins from sophomore Ben Draper – 6-0, 6-4 over Franz Luna on court five – and Paul Barretto – 6-1, 6-0 over Koenigsfest on court three – before Hoffmann clinched on court four.
