No. 31 Bears Fall to ASU In Third-Place Match
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -Â Thirty-first ranked California faced a familiar opponent in Arizona State on Sunday in the third-place match of the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge. Cal defeated the Sun Devils, 4-2, just eight days earlier in Berkeley. The Golden Bears took a 3-1 lead on Sunday, but this time the Sun Devils rallied to upset the Bears, 4-3, at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
ASU clinched the victory when Cal sophomore
Paul Barretto fell to Tim Ruehl, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, at court-four singles.
Cal captured the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead into singles, with the 33rd-ranked
Paul Barretto and
Can Kaya beating Justin Roberts and Makey Rakotomalala to clinch on court two.
Â
In singles, ASU's Justin Roberts defeated Cal sophomore
Jacob Brumm on court three, 6-2, 6-1, to tie things at 1-1.
Â
The Bears took a 3-1 lead thanks to two more Cal sophomores, as first
Bjorn Hoffmann knocked off Makey Rakotomalala, 6-2, 6-4, on court five and then
Ben Draper bested Benjamin Hannestad, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, on court six.
Â
The Bears just needed one more win to clinch the match. But losses by
Jack Molloy on court two and then
Yuta Kikuchi on one tied the contest at 3-3, and then Ruehl untied it on court four.
Â
Cal returns to action when it hosts Nevada and Saint Mary's in a doubleheader on Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
