BERKELEY – When All-American Toni Ann Williams ruptured her Achilles for the second time during her Cal career last month, it didn't just mark the end of the career of the Bears' most accomplished gymnast ever.
It also brought to a close the collegiate playing days of one of Cal's most transcendent, impactful and respected student-athletes in recent memory.
Williams isn't just a graceful and powerful gymnast who competed in the 2016 Olympics for her native Jamaica and has eight regular season All-American titles. Her impact stretches across Cal's athletic department and beyond with her dedication to service on campus and the respect she has earned from other student-athletes and programs.
Williams was named Monday as one of six finalists for the prestigious AAI Award, given annually to the top gymnast in the nation. The winner will be announced next month at the NCAA Championships.
