BERKELEY – Freshman Darren Wong continues to impress with his performances against stout competition and for the second time this season, those impressions garnered him some external notoriety as he picks up MPSF Gymnast of the Week honors, announced Tuesday.
Wong's all-around win in Cal's home finale, which pitted the Golden Bears against the reigning national champion Sooners of Oklahoma and the UIC Flames, earned him the recognition.
The Vancouver native, pulled in an 81.700 behind three career performances through six events, including a 13.700 on the parallel bars. He also matched his top marks on vault (14.300) to co-lead the meet with teammate Jonathan Wang, and on floor (14.550).
The selection marks the first time since 2015 that an individual Bear has won multiple weekly honors when All-American Kevin Wolting won the CGA Gymnast of the Week twice and also was named MPSF Gymnast of the Week that season.
Wong also was recognized as the CGA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 22.
Cal closes its regular season at Stanford on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. (PT).
