BERKELEY - California women's tennis lost the doubles point for the third straight time against a Pac-12 opponent, and the 19th-ranked Golden Bears went on to lose a match for the third consecutive time to a conference opponent, 4-3, on Friday against No. 15 Washington at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

Cal led at 2-1 and 3-2 but couldn't close out the Huskies. UW eventually clinched the victory when Sedona Gallagher beat Cal senior Maria Smith, 7-6(3), 7-6(5), at court-five singles.

The Bears' record now stands at 9-6 overall (3-3 in the Pac-12). Washington improved to 16-1 (6-2 Pac-12).

Cal won the first doubles match when the 28th-ranked Anna Bright and Jasie Dunk defeated Vanessa Wong and Zoey Weil, 6-1, on court two. But Washington evened matters when the 38th-ranked Stacey Fung and Nika Zupancic upset Cal's 13th-ranked Hana Mraz and Julia Rosenqvist, 6-3, on court one. The Huskies clinched the point when Kenadi Hance and Natsuho Arakawa topped Olivia Hauger and Katerina Stloukalova, 7-5, on court three.

The Bears later took a 2-1 lead in singles after wins by the 42nd-ranked Hauger (over Wong, 6-1, 6-2) on court two and the 111th-ranked Bright (against Katarina Kopcalic, 6-3, 6-1) on court three. Cal led 3-2 when the 40th-ranked Rosenqvist beat the 95th-ranked Fung, 6-4, 6-4, on court one.

But another loss knotted the match at 3-3 before Washington secured the win on court five.

"Today we had an opportunity to win the doubles point, and I thought we played better in doubles than in the last match," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "We have to take chances in the doubles point when we can, and if we had won it, this would've been a different match. That's the most important thing that we need to adjust for tomorrow.

"We really had opportunities in singles. We did really well on the top three courts. But we need to analyze a couple of the singles matches little bit. We'll rebound tomorrow, and we're going to make sure we're ready for the doubles tomorrow."

The Bears next host Washington State in a conference match on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Hellman. Prior to the match, Cal will honor its former players on Alumnae Day and celebrate the careers of Smith and Hauger on Senior Day.
