Golden Bears Add Transfer Jaylon Tyson
Versatile Wing Averaged Double-Figure Points For Texas Tech Last Season
BERKELEY – California men's basketball head coach
Mark Madsen announced Friday that Texas Tech transfer
Jaylon Tyson has signed to play for the Golden Bears for the 2023-24 season.
Â
Tyson, a 6-foot-7, 210-pound guard, arrives in Berkeley with two years of eligibility remaining after averaging 10.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.3 assists in 31 games played for the Red Raiders as a sophomore last season. He is the fifth transfer added to Cal's roster by Madsen, joining former Texas Tech teammate
Fardaws Aimaq,
Jalen Cone,
Mike Meadows and
Keonte Kennedy.
Â
"Jaylon is a unique player who can impact the game in many ways," Madsen said. "He can knock down 3s with tremendous efficiency, he finishes at the rim with physicality and his vision and willingness to hit the open man will help make everyone around him better. Jaylon is an outstanding student-athlete who is a leader both on and off the court. Our Cal family is going to love watching him suit up in the Blue and Gold. We're excited to have him in Berkeley."
Â
Tyson shot 48.3% (127 of 263) from the floor and 40.2% (43 of 107) from behind the arc for Texas Tech in 2022-23 while his 6.1 RPG and 1.4 SPG ranked eighth and 12th in the Big 12 Conference, respectively. Tyson started all 18 Big 12 games for Texas Tech and averaged 11.7 PPG and 7.1 RPG in conference contests.
Â
A native of Plano, Texas, Tyson joined the Red Raiders in December 2021 as a transfer from Texas. Tyson averaged 1.8 PPG and 1.1 RPG for Texas before entering the transfer portal.
