ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The California men's golf team wrapped its 1997-98 season Saturday with a 15th place finish in the NCAA Golf Championship at New Mexico's Championship Golf Course. Cal, which held down the 10th position at -7 after Friday's third round, entered today's competition with the goal of posting its second Top-10 finish at the NCAAs in the last four years. But those hopes would fall short for the Golden Bears as Cal carded its highest total of the four day with a combined 10-over-par fourth-round effort for a final total of 3-over 1155.
UNLV, which entered the tournament as the nation's top-ranked collegiate golf team, took home the 1998 NCAA crown with a final score of 34-under 1118. Clemson's 31-under total of 1121 was good enough for second, while Georgia Tech (-30), Oklahoma State (-25) and Arizona State (-22) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively. UCLA, the only other Pac-10 team to make the cut, finished in a two-way tie for eighth at 10-under-par 1142.
Individually for Cal, junior Dan Coyle fired his third consecutive sub-par round with a 3-under total of 69 and finished tied for 29th place overall at 3-under 285. However, the rest of the squad struggled as none of the other four was able to finish with a solid round. The Bears next best finisher was junior Dan Arroyo, who shot an uncharacteristic 6-over total of 78 on his way to a 1-over 289 tied for 42nd place finish. Freshman Adam Ainbinder, whose 5-over 77 was also his worst round at the NCAAs, finished tied for 48th at 2-over 290, while Sophomore Han Lee's 2-over 74 gave him a four-round total of 3-over 291 and placed him tied for 55th.
The individual title went to Minnesota's James McLean who shot a remarkable 17-under-par total of 271. Stanford's Joel Kribel of Pleasanton, UNLV's Chris Berry, TCU's J.J. Henry and Clemson's Charles Warren all shared second place honors at 16-under 272.
Despite today's disappointing finish, the 1997-98 season was a remarkable one for the Bears, who played the entire spring without their top player, Alemeda's Dong Yi. Ranked as low as 46th in the nation in early April, Cal's 1998 NCAA Championship appearance appeared unlikely. But after a fourth place finish at the Pac-10 Championship, a tournament Cal led for the first three rounds, Cal was rewarded with its postseason opportunity. Cal then went out an took advantage of that opportunity with its best-ever fourth place finish at the NCAA West Regional two weeks ago, earning the right to compete in the 1998 NCAA final.
