Anigwe Earns Second Frosh of the Week Honor
SAN FRANCISCO – California forward Kristine Anigwe averaged a double-double at the South Point Shootout over Thanksgiving weekend to earn her second Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors of the season, the league announced Monday.
Anigwe is just one of two Bears to be named Freshman of the Week multiple times in a season since the inception of the award in 2012-13. She joins sophomore teammate Mikayla Cowling as a multiple-award winner.
In the opening game of the South Point Shootout tournament in Las Vegas, Anigwe shined in Cal's loss to No. 10 Texas A&M, recording her first collegiate double-double behind a career-high 23-point, 12-rebound performance, including five offensive boards. Anigwe's point production was nearly 40 percent of Cal's total. Against Liberty, the rookie nearly recorded her second consecutive double-double, falling just one board shy of the mark with nine rebounds on top of 16 points. She was a perfect 8-8 from the line and added a career-best three steals to her total.
The Phoenix, Ariz. product finished the weekend averaging a team-best 19.5 ppg and 10.5 rpg, shooting .522 with an impressive .833 clip from the free throw line.
The Bears are back in Haas Pavilion this week as they host the Cal Classic presented by Four Points Sheraton featuring Cal, Saint Mary's, Sacramento State and Villanova. Cal's first game tips off Saturday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. against the Gaels.
