Golden Bears Earn No. 14 Preseason Ranking
BERKELEY, Calif. – For the second consecutive season, California women's gymnastics checks in at No. 14 in the Road to Nationals preseason poll.
Cal's two years at preseason No. 14 mark the highest preseason rankings in school history, topping Cal's previous best of No. 21, set in 2004.
Oklahoma, who the Golden Bears face on Jan. 15, tops the list with 2,266 points and 29 first-place votes. Florida was tabbed second with 15 first-place votes for 2,234 points. Alabama was third with 2,174 points and four votes, followed by Utah (2,171 points, 14 votes) and LSU (1,922 points).
This is the third consecutive season Cal is ranked in the top 25 in the preseason poll.
The Bears will face seven opponents ranked in the top 25, including four in the top 10: Top-ranked Oklahoma, Utah (No. 4), UCLA (6), Stanford (8), Oregon State (12), Arizona (18) and Southern Utah (24). Michigan State, who Cal hosts in the March 4 quad meet, checked in just outside of the Top 25 at No. 26 in the rankings.
Every opponent Cal will face in 2016 claimed a team or individual berth to 2015 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Regionals competition.
The Golden Bears open 2016 at the annual NorCal Classic on Sunday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m. at San Jose State's The Event Center.
The Bears welcome back nearly every gymnast from last year's NCAA Regional squad, including 2015 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Toni-Ann Williams and All-Pac-12 Second Team selection Charlie Owens, plus a healthy Serena Leong and Jessica Howe in addition to newcomers Sofie Seilnacht, Sylvie Seilnacht, Chelsea Shu and Emily Howe. With skill upgrades in numerous routines during the offseason, fans can expect a wide array of powerful and artistic performances, including a much-improved balance beam lineup.
Tickets for all regular-season home meets will be available for purchase at the ticket office on Spieker Plaza the day of the meet, beginning approximately one hour before the start of each meet and through the end of the second rotation. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth (12th grade and under) and seniors (age 65 and above). Membership for the popular Cub Club, which allows youth special perks such as an exclusive seating area and membership gifts, is available for purchase on CalBears.com
