California Runners Named All-Americans

Freshman Brie Oakley and Senior Bethan Knights Win 2017 Award

Berkeley, Calif. — California runners Bethan Knights and Brie Oakley were named NCAA Division 1 Cross Country All-Americans the USTFCCCA announced Monday. The honor is given annually to runners who finish within the top 40 at the NCAA Championship.
 
Oakley receives this honor for the first time in her collegiate career, and was only one of two freshman runners to receive the award this year. Oakley was also named Pac-12 Freshman Runner of the Year for her accomplishments in her first collegiate season. Oakley was the second freshman to finish on Saturday, placing 38th overall and running the 6,000m in 20:10.21. 
 
Knights receives the award for the second time in her career as she took 23rd overall (20:02.52) this weekend. The senior last received the award during her freshman season in 2014 as she took 25th place, running as an individual. 
 
This is only the fourth time in Bears' program history for two runners to receive All-American honors, last occurring in 2011 when Deborah Maier and Chelsea Reilly received the award. The Bears team earned a berth to the national championship for the first time in six years on Saturday, placing 22nd overall, besting their most recent USTFCCA ranking by one place.
