Wide Receivers Lead The Way In Performances By Former Cal Players

BERKELEY – Wide receivers Keenan Allen, Trevor Davis and Marvin Jones Jr. led the way in performances by former Cal players for their respective winning NFL teams in Week 14 of the league's 2017 season.

Allen continued to move into uncharted territory by becoming the first NFL player in 2017 with four consecutive 100-yard receiving games after registering six receptions for 115 yards in the Los Angeles Chargers' 30-13 home win over Washington. The victory kept the Chargers tied for first place in the AFC West and extended their win streak to a season-high four in a row heading into their showdown at Kansas City next Saturday evening in a game between the top two teams in the AFC West at Kansas City. The accomplishment of four straight 100-yard receiving games came one week after Allen became the first NFL player ever to record at least 10 catches, 100 yards receiving and one touchdown reception in three consecutive contests, a streak that came to an end Sunday with fewer than 10 catches and no scores. Allen has recorded career highs of 83 receptions and 1143 yards receiving through his first 13 games of 2017.

Davis played a huge role in Green Bay's 27-21 comeback overtime win on the road at still winless Cleveland by returning a punt a career-long 65 yards from the Packers' 10-yard line to the Browns' 25-yard line with 2:37 remaining in the game. The punt return set up Green Bay's game-tying touchdown with 0:17 to play that sent the contest into overtime.

Jones Jr. continued to be one of the top deep threats in the league with his three receptions in a 24-21 road win at Tampa Bay going for 64 yards for an average of 21.3 yards per reception. Jones is fourth in the NFL in the categories with an average of 17.35 yards per catch.

Another former Cal wide receiver Darius Powe caught two passes for 13 yards in his NFL debut for the New York Giants and continued to play in the game after breaking his foot on his first NFL career reception. Powe, who had been added to the Giants' roster from the practice squad last Wednesday, will miss the remainder of the season with the injury.

Cal also had one former player on each of the first two teams to clinch both division crows and playoff spots in Week 14 action. Mychal Kendricks contributed one tackle to Philadelphia's 43-35 win at the Los Angeles Rams that gave the Eagles the NFC East title, while Tyson Alualu had two tackles in Pittsburgh's 39-38 home victory over Baltimore that lifted the Steelers to the AFC North crown.

Jared Goff and the Rams maintained a one-game lead over Seattle in the NFC West despite the loss to the Eagles when the Seahawks also fell at Jacksonville. The Rams and Seahawks will meet for control of the NFC West on Sunday in Seattle. The Seahawks won the first meeting between the clubs in Week 5 in Los Angeles.

Cameron Jordan and the New Orleans Saints' hold a share of the NFC South lead along with Ron Rivera (head coach) and Richard Rodgers Sr. (assistant safeties/defensive backs coach), who have led their Carolina Panthers' to five wins in the last six games to pull into a tie atop the NFC South with the Saints.

Mitchell Schwartz is a starting offensive tackle for the Kansas City team that will host Allen and the Chargers on Saturday evening.

Cal began the season ranked second in the Pac-12 and tied for 13th nationally with 32 former Golden Bears representing Cal as players on NFL teams when the league's 2017 season opened. The current list also includes 32 players on active 53-man NFL rosters and two others who are members of practice squads. Three more former Cal players are coaching in the NFL.
