BERKELEY – C.J. Anderson and Richard Rodgers put up season-best numbers while
Cameron Jordan was credited with a career-high four passes defended and picked up another to stop a two-point conversion attempt to lead the way in performances by former Cal players for their respective NFL teams in Week 15 of the league's 2017 season.
Anderson piled up 30 rushes for 158 yards on the ground for the second and third-highest totals of his career to lead Denver to a 25-13 victory over Indianapolis on Thursday Night Football. The victory was the Broncos' second in a row after a 3-9 start.
Rodgers had four receptions for 77 yards including a season-long 36-yard catch as well as his first touchdown grab of the year but his Packers' fell 31-24 at Carolina and Green Bay was eliminated from playoff contention when an Atlanta team featuring fellow former Cal player
Alex Mack won at Tampa Bay on Monday Night Football. Rodgers' father, Richard Rodgers Sr., is the assistant safeties coach for the Panthers while former Cal player Ron Rivera is the head coach of the team that is now 10-4 and tied for first-place in the NFC South with Jordan's Saints after its win over the Packers.
Jordan continued his tremendous season with his performance in New Orleans' 31-19 home win over the Jets and now has a career-high 11 passes defended on the campaign in addition to his 55 tackles, 10 sacks (-76.5 yards), 14 TFL, 21 QH, 1 INT (TD), 11 PD, 2 FF.
Jordan and Mack are two of nine former Cal players who are on teams that would be in the NFL Playoffs if they were to start on Tuesday. Mychal Kendricks (Philadelphia) and
Tyson Alualu (Pittsburgh) are on teams that have clinched playoff spots with the Eagles also securing a first-round bye. Lorenzo Alexander (Buffalo),
Deandre Coleman (Buffalo), Jared Goff (Los Angeles Rams),
Mitchell Schwartz (Kansas City) and
Brian Schwenke (Tennessee) are also teams currently sitting in playoff spots. Daniel Lasco is also a member of the New Orleans Saints but on injured reserve.
Seven other former Cal players – Keenan Allen (Los Angeles Chargers),
Marvin Jones Jr. (Detroit), L.P. Ladouceur (Dallas), Marshawn Lynch (Oakland), Chris McCain (Los Angeles Chargers),
Brandon Mebane (Los Angeles Chargers) and
Giorgio Tavecchio (Oakland) – are on teams still in the playoff hunt as is Miami assistant defensive line coach
Andre Carter.
Cal began the 2017 NFL season ranked second in the Pac-12 and tied for 13th nationally with 32 former Golden Bears representing Cal as players on NFL teams when the league's 2017 season opened. The current list includes 31 players on 53-man NFL rosters and three others who are members of practice squads. Three more former Cal players are coaching in the NFL.
