Cal Third After Two Rounds At The Goodwin
Collin Morikawa Leading The Way For Golden Bears In Second Place Two Shots Off Lead
STANFORD, Calif. – California (286-280 – 566, +6) earned a spot in the last group for Saturday's third and final round at The Goodwin by moving into sole possession of third place Friday at the Stanford Golf Course. The Golden Bears will play along with second-round leader and host Stanford (279-279 – 558, -2) and second-place USC (286-279 – 565, +5). The first of five threesomes from the Pac-12 trio begins from the first tee at 1:50 pm PT.
Collin Morikawa (69-68 – 137, -3) is in second place on the individual leaderboard after 36 holes and is two shots behind USC's Kaito Onishi (69-66 – 135. -5). The two will tee off in the final group of the day at 2:34 pm along with Stanford's David Snyder (67-71 – 138, -2), who is one of six players tied for third one shot behind Morikawa and three off Onishi's pace.
Morikawa got to five-under for the tournament and four-under for the round before making bogey on two of his final three holes. Morikawa, who started on the 10th tee, four-putted the par-five seventh after getting to the green in two and then was unable to convert and up-and-down on the par-four ninth. He did have a trio of long birdie putts on the par-four 15th (30 feet), first (18 feet) and fifth (25 feet) holes. He also had birdies on the par-four 13th and par-five 16th holes while his other bogey was on the par-four 18th.
KK Limbhasut (71-71 – 142, +2) shot a 71 for the fifth straight round dating back to all three of his rounds at the Southern Highlands Collegiate and moved up two spots into a tie for 23rd.
Kaiwen Liu (75-70 – 145, +5) jumped up 36 spots into a tie for 40th, while
James Song (71-75 – 146, +6) dropped 22 places into a tie for 47th and
Ben Doyle (77-71 – 148, +8) moved up 28 into a tie for 70th.
- Morikawa extended his amazing streaks of consecutive under-par rounds and rounds of par or better to 15 and 20, respectively
- Morikawa will be attempting to pick up his second victory of the season and fifth of his career on Saturday, as well as extend his strings of top-five, top-10 and top-20 finishes to eight, 14 and 21 in a row, respectively
- Liu played two-under over his final 17 holes after opening with a double bogey on the par-four 10th
- Doyle had a wild ride on his second nine with all four of his birdies (1, 3, 7, 9) and three of his five bogeys (2, 5, 6)
- Cal is playing without Sebastian Crampton in its lineup for the first time since his 2014-15 true freshman campaign (excluding his 2016-17 redshirt season). Crampton, who finished third at The Goodwin in 2018, wrapped up playing a four-round Mackenzie Tour qualifying school event as an amateur on Friday at Carlton Oaks Country Club with a tied for seventh-place finish that guarantees him six 2019 starts on the Mackenzie Tour after he turns professional. Crampton had suited up for each of Cal's last 42 events (excluding his 2016-17 redshirt season).
What They Are Saying …
Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun
- "It's been a team effort thus far, and I couldn't be more proud of how everyone has been staying patient. We've gotten some bad breaks with mud on the golf balls that's led towards some bogeys, but the team has kept plugging away. It will be important to get off to a good start tomorrow and try and put pressure on Stanford and USC."
Collin Morikawa
- "My putting saved me throughout the day until the final three holes. My tee shots weren't as good as yesterday but I still kept the ball in play and gave myself more chances for birdies. The bump in today's round was my 16th hole (hole 7). I hit a great second shot to have an eagle putt and ended up with a bogey. Four-putting is never enjoyable, but I have to keep my head high because I've been rolling my putts well. Tomorrow is another day and I just have to keep playing my game and convert some birdies."
