Cal Trounces Utah At Homecoming

Bears Welcome Back Alumni For PAC Matchup

BERKELEY – California beat Utah in conference play Saturday at Homecoming on Witter Rugby Field, where alumni reunited to enjoy the Golden Bears' eighth shutout of the spring in a 20-try win over the Utes.

The Bears (13-1, 3-0 PAC) got four tries apiece from fullback Troy Lockyear and wing Marcus Shankland. Flyhalf Elliot Webb kicked seven conversions (7-of-15) before being replaced by Sam Walsh (2-for-5).

Utah flyhalf Kelsin Puipunu missed a chance to get his team on the board when his penalty attempt went wide left from 40 meters at minute 68, and the Bears repelled the Utes (2-3, 1-2 PAC) from on a couple of sequences to keep them scoreless on the day.

"Credit to Utah for staying hungry to the very end," said head coach Jack Clark. "They're a young team that will be a handful in the future."

"We talk about standing on the shoulders of the teams that came before us, and today was amazing to have some of those teams in attendance," said captain Nic Mirhashem of Saturday's Homecoming, "We wanted to play well for them and show our commitment to continuing this great program."

Three of Cal's national championship teams received special recognition during halftime against Utah, starting with the 2004 national champions, which celebrated the 15th Anniversary of its title season. The 1999 national champions were also honored on the occasion of their 20th anniversary, as was the 1994 national champions, which returned for the celebration of their 25th anniversary.

Prior to the win over Utah, Cal defeated Humboldt State as 14 different Bears found the try zone.

Two exciting weekends remain in the regular season home schedule, beginning next Saturday, March 23, with a PAC Rugby Conference showdown with Arizona. Then, on March 30, the Gaels from Saint Mary's College visit Strawberry Canyon for the final match of the regular season.

The Golden Bears are projected to host up to two rounds of the national collegiate postseason, starting with the Round of 16 on Saturday, April 13, against an opponent to be determined. Witter Rugby Field will also be a national quarterfinal location for two matches the following weekend on Saturday, April 20.
