RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – The Bears continued their trend of starting tournaments slow, but the women's golf team bounced back to defeat San Jose State and advance to the semifinals of the Lamkin Invitational at The Farms Golf Club.

All spring, Cal has been plagued by poor first rounds and Monday was no exception. Cal took seventh place in the 12-team field with a 26-over 314 in the stroke play portion of the event. All 12 teams played one round of stroke play to determine eight teams that would advance to the championship bracket of match play. The Bears were one of the last teams in the bracket, finishing four shots better than Central Arkansas, who finished ninth.

Once in the knockout round, the Bears flourished. Cal was matched up against San Jose State, who finished the stroke play portion in second place with a 12-over 300 score.

However, the Bears were locked in as Katherine Zhu was the first person to clinch a match and she did so in 14 holes. Zhu defeated Maddie White by 6&4 as she recorded two birdies. Zhu took the lead early as White bogeyed the first four holes, Zhu shot even par to take a three shot lead out of the gate. She kept the pressure on, only losing two holes the entire round.

Amina Wolf was in a 1-shot competition for most of the day, but Franziska Friedrich of San Jose State won three consecutive holes to clinch a point for the Spartans by a score of 4&3.

Maria Herraez Galvez put the Bears back ahead as she won her match 4&3. The Spaniard seized control of her match by winning four straight holes and taking the lead over Alexandra Cooper. San Jose State's Natasha Andrea Oon defeated Marianne Li 1-up to bring the match back even at 2-2. Li notched four birdies in the round, but was unable to grab the win, which set up a deciding final match.

That final match was contested between Cindy Oh and Abegail Arevalo. Oh took the lead on the opening hole thanks to a birdie and she was able to hold that lead for the first 10 holes. After losing the 16th hole (she started on the sixth hole), Oh retook the lead on 18 and never relinquished it as she won 2&1 to give the Bears the win.

During stroke play, Zhu led the way for the Bears as she shot a 4-over 76. She recorded one birdie as she shot an even par over her final nine holes. Zhu finished in a tie for 10th.

Herraez Galvez shot 6-over 78 and Oh tallied a 7-over 79 for the Bears. Herraez Galvez finished in a tie for 20th while Oh finished in a tie for 24th. Playing as an individual, Sofia Lundell shot 8-over 72 and led the team with four birdies on the day as she finished the round in a tie for 32nd.

Cal will return to action tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. for the semifinal round of match play where they will take on San Diego State.
