International Competition Ahead

Cleverley, Kim, And Westin Head To Europe For National Team Duties

BERKELEY – While spring is full swing in the Bay Area, three current members on the Cal women's soccer team are in preparing to compete for their respective national teams. Junior striker Abi Kim and sophomore forward Emma Westin will both be competing at 2019 Women's International Under-23 La Manga Tournament on the coast in La Manga while sophomore midfielder Daisy Cleverley has been called into camp with the full New Zealand Women's National Team for a pair of matches against Norway.

"Having three of our players representing their respective countries at the same time is really cool," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "Abi, Daisy, and Emma are all outstanding players and deserving of this honor. We wish them all the best."

Kim and Westin will square off on Friday in the first game of the Under-23 La Manga Tournament. A member of the Under-20 U.S. Women's National Team that competed at the 2018 U-20 Women's World Cup in France, Kim led the Bears in scoring this season and was an All-Pac-12 and All-Region Selection. Kim has also spent time with the U.S. Under-18 National team. The U.S. will also square off against France (April 7) and Italy (April 9).

Westin, a sophomore forward from Stockholm, Sweden, is coming off an impressive second year in Berkeley in which she led the Bears in assists and finished second in both scoring and overall points. A Second Team Pac-12 All-Academic Team Selection, Westin has previously represented Sweden at both the Under-17 and Under-19 levels. After opening the competition on Friday against the United States, Sweden will also take on Italy (April 7) and the England Under-21s (April 9).

A sophomore midfielder from Auckland, Cleverley has been a mainstay in camp this year for New Zealand, recently competing for the Football Ferns at the Cup of Nations in Australia. The Cal presence on the New Zealand roster is strong, with Golden Bear graduate Betsy Hassett also playing for the Football Ferns. New Zealand will play Friday (April 5) and Tuesday (April 9) against Norway, who is ranked No. 13 in the latest FIFA World Rankings.

Another Golden Bear grad will be in action on the international stage as Alex Morgan and the United States Women's National Team take on Australia (April 4) and Belgium (April 7). The 2018 CONCACAF Women's Player of the Year, Morgan enters Thursday's friendly against the Matildas with 99 career international goals.
