Fast Break: Justice Sueing
With nine newcomers on this year's Cal Men's Basketball roster, there are plenty of fresh faces to get to know among the Golden Bears. The Fast Break is bringing five key facts about a Cal newcomer to CalBears.com. Next up in the series is a freshman who brings a little island flavor to the Golden Bear roster.
Previous Fast Break spotlights:
1. Island Style
Sueing spent part of his childhood in Hawai'i, and still pays homage to his tropical upbringing. Aside from being an avid coconut oil user (for his hair!), Sueing gets a taste of home when he visits his family.
"I love a good home-cooked meal like some rice, spam and cinnamon on that," he said. "My Mom's shoyu chicken and rice is my favorite of all time. It won't ever get old."
Sueing moved to the "Mainland" for his final two years of high school to elevate his chances at a collegiate basketball career. He transferred to Mater Dei in Southern California.
"It was a huge adjustment academically, and for basketball. That big step, and that big challenge is what I really needed in my game," Sueing said. "It really elevated me as a person and character, and my skills too. That whole adjustment was really good, but it was hard."
2. What's Up, Doc?
While attending Mater Dei, Sueing developed a passion for giving back. That passion has also inspired his potential career choice.
"I feel like giving back to the community is one of the biggest things because of growing up, and playing at Mater Dei where a lot of kids kind of look up to you," Sueing shared. "Now moving into college just giving back to kids and being a role model is really important."
"Besides that, I've always wanted to contribute to society, so that's why I'm trying to go through pre-med, so I can become a doctor. Really keeping the young influenced, and engaged into the future is huge."
3. The Freshman's a Junior
His father, Justice Sueing Sr., played basketball both at the collegiate level for the University of Hawaii and professionally overseas, and he credits his Dad's tutelage as being pivotal to his development.
"It's been huge. He's my biggest critic by far," Sueing explained. "He breaks down every little thing that I do wrong, and I'm grateful for that because I need that. I'm always open to learning and trying to perfect my game. He plays a main role in that."
"I wanted to follow in his footsteps. Here I am now making my own path right now. It's a dream come true really," he added.
4. J-Sway
At a young age, Sueing received the nickname "Sway" from friends, which is an homage to his smooth playing style on the court.
"I was younger -- either a freshman or in eighth grade -- when I started hooping, and just the way I was playing was "sway," and I've just kind of been rolling with it ever since. People say I play real smooth, so I've just been stuck with that nickname."
5. Lefty Swagger
As a left-handed basketball player, Sueing likes watching a variety of NBA players play. Among them is All-Star and fellow lefty James Harden.
"I try to take away from a lot of players," Sueing said. "I try to take little things that can work with my game, but I watch a lot of James Harden because he's left-handed, knows how to create space, get to the rack and also create for everyone around him. I like that."
