Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Cal Athletics

Sun Devils Stymie Bears

BERKELEY – Turnovers and a poor offensive performance plagued the Cal women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon, falling to Arizona State, 57-42, at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears (15-6, 6-4 Pac-12) scored a season-low 42 points and were held to just six points in both the first and third quarters. The Sun Devils (15-7, 6-4 Pac-12) completed the season sweep of the Bears, shooting 46.3 percent on the afternoon and forcing the Golden Bears into 14 turnovers.

Kristine Anigwe led the Bears with 15 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Jaelyn Brown added eight points and five rebounds off the bench. Sun Devils guard Courtney Ekmark led all scorers with 12 points while forward Kianna Ibis added 11 points in the victory.

The Golden Bears got off to slow start, going scoreless for the first 7:21 of the game as Arizona State jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Cal committed seven of its 14 turnovers in the first quarter and went 3-15 from the floor. The Bears closed the quarter on a 6-2 run and were able to draw within seven points midway through the second quarter after freshman guard Kianna Smith sank a pair of free throws.

Yet facing one of the top defensive teams in the conference, the Bears shot a season-low 28.3 percent (15-53) from the floor and went 2-19 from beyond the arc. Cal was unable to close the deficit further in the second half, despite holding the Sun Devils to just 24 points over the final 20 minutes.

"Credit Arizona State, they are always tough defensively and they caused us some problems tonight," said head coach Lindsay Gottlieb. "But we know we didn't make enough shots. I thought we got a lot of good looks and we  just didn't knock them down. It's hard to win a game shooting 28%, but I think we can use this to motivate us and have a good weekend next weekend."

The Bears will now hit the road for a pair of games against ranked foes. Cal takes on 7th-ranked Oregon on Friday at 8 p.m. PT before squaring off against the 17th-ranked Beavers on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT in Corvallis. The Bears split the series vs the Ducks last season, falling on buzzer beater at home before responding with a road win in Eugene. Oregon is currently in first place in the conference, its lone Pac-12 loss coming on the road to Oregon State.
