Cal-Oregon Postgame Quotes

California Head Coach Wyking Jones

Opening Statement:
"That was a tough one. I thought we had gotten away from digging ourselves into holes in the beginning of games. We have been really good out of the gate as of late, and today I look up at the score and its 0-9 and we have to try and get back into the game. We didn't set a good tone coming out of the gates. I wasn't happy about that, because I thought we had gotten past that. We had 19 offensive rebounds, but only scored seven points off of them— that's the exact same stat we had against UCLA here, so that's also tough. We turned it over 16 times, and a lot of those were unforced turnovers, so that's tough too. This one is a tough one. The guys battled and fought, but we put ourselves in bad situations by turning the ball over and being in foul trouble."

On Coleman's performance:
"I thought he was really good tonight. I liked the fact that he slowed his game down. He didn't look like he was just running around out of control. He was very under control and he picked his spots to look to attack. I thought he was good tonight. He shot a good percentage -- should've shot better from the free throw line -- but he had a solid game, barely turned the ball over and had two steals."

On McNeill's shooting drought:
"I tell him to keep shooting. If he's open, he should shoot the ball. Just a couple of games ago against Arizona State, he had five (threes). I really think that's just the ebb and flow of a freshman player. I encourage him to keep shooting the ball, and he will be fine. Once Marcus and Kingsley got into foul trouble, we couldn't play inside out. We had to use our perimeter guys to score. We're in there with just Cole (Welle), -- who did a heck of a job on the inside glass -- and Justice -- who's not much of a post-up guy, but a perimeter guy— it puts a lot more pressure on Don, Juhwan and Darius, the guys on the perimeter, to score and create opportunities for themselves. When we get the ball inside, we get moving, guys cut to the rim, and we have Marcus and King who are great passers out of the post, so when those guys were in foul trouble, we didn't have that option."

California Freshman Forward Justice Sueing

On how he adjusted after getting into foul trouble early on:
"I just adjust to how the refs were calling the game. Whether it was a foul or not I just had to keep playing through it because the call was already made. But other than that, we needed to capitalize and we didn't, especially when you allow them to get to the free throw line often. Any team that is getting to the free throw line more than us makes it kind of hard to play against."

On what makes Oregon's defense tough:
"They're a really talented team with a lot of size and athleticism. Us going against them made it kind of hard, but we've scouted them and saw that they had weaknesses, but we did not capitalize on them."

On if the team felt like they could make a run when the lead was cut to five points:
"Yeah, we always knew that if we kept the game close throughout we can make a run at any time, but those defensive lapses where we gave them a layup, a dunk or let them get an open shot kind of hurt us. We always feel like if we keep the game close we can make a run at any time."

California Junior Guard Don Coleman:

On if saw anything specifically defensively that opened up his scoring:
" I just tried to stay aggressive like I always do. Luckily the shots fell and that was that."
