BERKELEY – California women's gymnastics used the program's fourth-highest floor total in school history to power the Golden Bears to a win over the Wildcats. Cal topped Arizona, 195.950-194.425, in the home opener Saturday afternoon in Haas Pavilion.

"We got better today. That's been our focus after a really rough start on the road," said head coach Justin Howell. "We've been making mental errors, not physical errors, that have led to physical errors on the equipment. The last few weeks, we've been focusing on controlling the things we can control and just getting better. We can't live in any excuses. We've been working a lot on mental focus, keywords and not being distracted in meets. Being at home and having our home energy was great, and that certainly helped, but we did a much better job at staying anchored mentally."

Nina Schank was once again dominant on the bars, winning her second career bars title with a 9.85. Arianna Robinson won her first vault title of the season by matching her career-high 9.90. Toni-Ann Williams took her team-best eighth event title of the season with a 9.95 on floor.

A pair of Bears matched their career-high vault totals as Cal jumped out to a 49.225 score in the first rotation. Robinson's title-winning 9.90 led Cal, and Cassidy Keelen scored a 9.85 to match her personal best. Williams finished second with a 9.875. Every Bear in the lineup scored a 9.775 or better to help Cal to a 49.225-48.725 lead over the Wildcats.

Cal turned in a total team effort on bars for the Bears' most improved performance in four outings after all six gymnasts hit their routines. Schank won the event with her 9.85, and Sofie Seilnacht's 9.775 performance earned second. Cal went 48.700 on the uneven bars, the team' second-highest score on the event all season.

"Our goal on bars was to hit 6-for-6, and we did that and I was very pleased," Howell said. "I was disappointed with some of the scores we were awarded on bars. We can't control what the judges do, but we did our job."

Though Cal was forced to count a fall on the event, each of the four gymnasts who hit her set scored above a 9.80. Keelen once again scored a career-high to lead the Bears on beam with a 9.85, added to a season-high 9.825 total by Chelsea Shu. Cal finished with a 48.625 on the event.

"I'm happy that we're not reacting to mistakes. We put them behind us. That's what we didn't do well early in the season," Howell said. "Although we don't want mistakes, I'm happy to see that we're learning from them and learning how to deal with them when they happen."

Cal roared to life on floor, combining for the fourth-highest total on the event in school history, a 49.400. All but one Bear set a career or season-high total. While Williams was the only Bear not to tally a career or season-high total, her 9.95 won the event. Kyana George was second with a career-best 9.90, and Robinson took third with a season-best 9.875. Sofie Seilnacht (9.85), Sylvie Seilnacht (9.825) and Shu (9.825) all tallied career-best totals.
