BERKELEY Â - Four future members of the California women's soccer team made it official on Wednesday afternoon, signing their National Letters of Intent. Head coach
Neil McGuire and the Golden Bears are excited to welcome Abena Aidoo (Modesto, Calif.), Sydney Collins (Beaverton, Ore.), Paige Metayer (Irvine, Calif.), and Emma Treasure (Portland, Ore.) to Berkeley next season.
The quartet brings a wealth of experience and success at the high school, club, and international levels.
A midfielder from Modesto, California, Aidoo has spent time with both the Under-17 and Under-20 Ghanaian Women's National Teams. Aidoo helped lead Placer United to Surf Cup and National Premier League titles under coaches Ron Benjamin and Todd DeCarlo, and earned MVP honors in her lone season of high school soccer at James C. Enochs High School.
"Abena is a skillful and creative attacker who will be an asset in breaking down defenses," said McGuire. "She can both score and provide scoring in the attack."
Collins, a defender from Beaverton, Oregon, helped lead Jesuit High School to a pair of state titles, including an Oregon 6A state championship in her senior season. A three-time team captain, Collins was selected to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team and was named to the TopDrawerSoccer Best XI for the High School Girls All-American Game, held in December. Collins plays for coach Kyle Steinbaugh at the Portland Thorns Development Academy and has been called into camp by the Under-17 United States Women's National Team.
"Sydney is a strong and composed defender who can play either central or wide," said McGuire. "Her ability to cover ground quickly also makes her a valuable attacking option from deeper lying positions."
A midfielder from Irvine, California, Metayer helped SoCal Blues to three consecutive ECNL Playoff appearances under head coach Randy Dodge, also winning Surf Cup in 2017. Metayer is currently third in the Development Academy League in goals per game, with 11 goals in 20 appearances this regular season. A three-year magna cum laude student and two-time first-team all-league selection at University High School, Metayer also competed in track and field, holding the school record in the 400 meter dash.
"Paige is a gifted all-around player who has the ability to score goals from a variety of positions," said McGuire. "She has a nice blend of speed and power which makes her a very difficult matchup for opponents."
A teammate of Collins at Jesuit High School in Oregon, Treasure was named the United Soccer Coaches State Player of the Year after winning the Oregon State 6A Championship. A midfielder/forward, Treasure led Jesuit in scoring each of her last three seasons and earned United Soccer Coaches All-America honors following her senior year. She also plays for Portland Thorns FC Academy under coach Kyle Steinbaugh.
"Emma will give us a strong attacking presence on the left side of the field as well as a real threat on set pieces," said McGuire. She has a tireless work ethic which suits our pressing style."
The incoming class joins a Golden Bears side that went 13-6-1 in 2017 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the 14
th consecutive season. Cal returns both leading scorers in forwards
Miranda Nild and
Abi Kim, as well as Pac-12 All-Freshmen selections
