IRVING, Texas – The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced Wednesday that five former Cal football players – Matt Anderson, J.D. Hinnant, Tony Mekari, Chas Peterson and Luke Rubenzer – have been selected to the 2018 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers. Selections must have completed their final season of collegiate eligibility in 2017. Student-athletes who have graduated or turned professional and are not returning to collegiate football are also among the selections.

"We are pleased to see another record number of athletes honored by the Hampshire Honor Society this year," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "Over the past decade, it has become a powerful vehicle for schools to recognize their college football players who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically, and we congratulate the schools and each of these young men for their commitment to excellence in all aspects of their lives."

Below are notes on each of Cal's selections.

Matt Anderson, PK, 3.52 GPA, Business Administration Major (Education Major Masters)

• Cal's all-time leader in points (316) and field goals made (60)
• Pac-12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Campbell Trophy semifinalist as a 2017 senior
• Three-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection (2015-17), earning first-team honors as a 2015 sophomore as well as second-team recognition as a 2016 junior and 2017 senior
• Two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District® pick (2016-17)
• Three-time Golden Bear Achievement Award pick (2013-15) for being the Cal football player with the highest cumulative GPA
• Earned Cal's Frank Schlessinger Coaches Award as a senior to honor his outstanding athletic and academic success

J.D. Hinnant, OL, 3.231 GPA, Legal Studies Major

• Played in 15 career games
• Produced one of the most memorable moments of the season as a 2016 junior when he caught a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter against Oregon to extend Cal's lead to 42-35 in a game the Golden Bears eventually won in double overtime, 52-49

Tony Mekari, NG, 3.219 GPA, Legal Studies Major

• Played in 48 of 49 possible career games with 30 starts and contributed career totals of 86 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss (-28 yards), 2.0 sacks (-13 yards), one pass breakup, one fumble recovery and six quarterback hurries
• Two-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection (2016-17), earning first-team honors as a 2016 junior as well as second-team recognition as a 2017 senior
• Earned Cal's Ken Harvey Award for his academic commitment and improvement as a senior and the prestigious Jonathan and Judy Hoff Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year in his junior campaign

Chas Peterson, WR, 3.224 GPA, Sociology Major

• Earned the Dink Artal Award as Cal's Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year as a 2017 senior

Luke Rubenzer, S, 3.262 GPA, Business Administration Major

• Played in 41 career games with seven starts
• Finished his career with 123 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss (-6 yards), four interceptions that he returned for 72 yards, five pass breakups and three fumble recoveries on defense
• Began his Cal career as a quarterback as a 2013 freshman and saw significant action in 11 games off the bench as a 2014 rookie and was the team's third-leading rusher and scorer on the ground with 225 yards and three rushing touchdowns on 52 carries that were second on the team, while also completing 12-of-21 passes (57.1%) for 166 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions for a 126.40 passer efficiency rating
• Three-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection (2015-17), earning first-team honors as a 2017 senior after picking up second team recognition as a 2015 sophomore and being an honorable mention pick during his 2016 junior season
