NCAA champion and Olympic 800-meter runner Alysia Montano is one of 10 new members of the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame.

10 Golden Bears Elected To Cal Hall of Fame

BERKELEY – Ten Golden Bears, a group that features Olympians, All-Americans, a legendary coach and the longtime voice of Cal football, represent the 2018 class for the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame. Together, the 33rd induction class is set for formal enshrinement later this fall.
 
Those who have been elected into the Hall are:
  • Duje Draganja (men's swimming, 2002-05) – three-time Olympian and eight-time NCAA champion who won a silver medal in the 50-meter free for Croatia in 2004
  • Ramon Jimenez-Gaona (men's track & field, 1990-93) – three-time Olympian and school-record holder in the discus (210-11) who was a three-time NCAA runner-up in the event
  • Geoff McArthur (football, 2000-04) – set five school receiving records and two Big Game marks and earned All-America honors as a junior in 2003
  • Valerie McClain (men's and women's rowing, 1978-82) – two-time Olympian and a pioneering coxswain who earned letters for both the men's and women's rowing programs
  • Teri McKeever (women's swimming & diving head coach, 1992-present) – the 2012 U.S. Olympic head coach has guided Cal to four NCAA team championships and 10 consecutive top-3 national finishes
  • Alysia Montaño (women's track & field, 2004-08) – 2012 Olympian in the 800 meters won NCAA indoor and outdoor titles in the event and is a seven-time USA champion
  • Leon Powe (men's basketball, 2004-06) – the 2004 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year was a two-time first-team all-conference pick and a second-team All-American in 2006
  • Kristina Thorson (softball, 2003-06) – the first Golden Bear softball player named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year and a three-time second-team All-American
  • Elsie Windes Wenger (women's water polo, 2004-07) – three-time All-American helped the United States to two Olympic medals, including gold in 2012
  • Joe Starkey (voice of Cal football, 1975-present) – the longtime radio voice of Cal football who enters his 44th year behind the microphone this fall
Formal induction ceremonies are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 26, at the annual Hall of Fame banquet at the Greek Orthodox Church Conference Center in Oakland. Information on tickets to the banquet will be announced at a later date. The new inductees will also be honored on the field during Cal's Oct. 27 football game vs. Washington at California Memorial Stadium.
 
With the addition of the new members, the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame now features 307 individuals and six rowing teams. The school's Hall of Fame, which is located on the west side of Memorial Stadium and is open to all ticket holders after each home game, was inaugurated in 1986.

Duje Draganja (men's swimming, 2002-05) – Draganja was a three-time Olympian for his native Croatia, winning a silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle at the 2004 Athens Olympics. He captured eight NCAA titles during his Cal career, including back-to-back wins in the 100-yard free at the 2003 and 2005 NCAA Championships. He also earned five individual and 10 relay victories at the Pac-10 Championships. Named the 2005 Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year, Draganja set a then-NCAA record of 41.49 seconds in the 100 free at the 2005 NCAA meet and that swim still stands as second in Cal history behind only Nathan Adrian.

Ramon Jimenez-Gaona (men's track & field, 1990-93) – Jimenez-Gaona set the still-standing school record in the discus with a mark of 210-11 at the 1992 Pac-10 Championships. A three-time NCAA runner-up in the discus – 1991 (202-7), 1992 (206-9) and 1993 (200-0), he captured the Pac-10 title in 1991 and '92. Jimenez-Gaona competed for his native Paraguay at three Olympic Games – 1988 in Seoul (24th place), 1992 in Barcelona (16th) and 1996 in Atlanta (16th). In addition, he threw the discus at the World Championships four times and won the South American championship in 1993 and '97.

Geoff McArthur (football, 2000-04) – McArthur is one of the top wide receivers in school history. He ranks as Cal's all-time leader with 3,188 receiving yards, shares all-time lead in 100-yard receiving games (11) and is second with 202 career receptions. In addition, McArthur is seventh at Cal with 20 touchdown catches. Named a second-team All-American as a junior in 2003, he was also chosen second-team All-Pac-10, the team's Most Improved Player and the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame's College Male Athlete of the Year. McArthur continues to hold Cal's season receiving yards mark with 1,504 in 2003 while his 85 receptions the same season are fourth. A first-team All-Pac-12 selection as a senior, he led the team in receptions (57), receiving yards (862) and touchdown receptions (7). He holds Cal single-game record for most receptions (16) and is second in receiving yards (245), picking up both in the 2003 Big Game.

Val McClain (men's and women's rowing, 1978-82) – One of the few varsity athletes to compete for both a men's and women's program, McClain raced as a coxswain for the men's crew in 1979 and as a cox for the women's team in 1978, '81 and '82. Under men's coach Steve Gladstone, she coxed the men to an undefeated season and a Pac-10 title in 1979. As a result, she became the first woman to earn a Big C letter in a men's sport at Cal. McClain remained in the eight for the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley (Cal finished second), becoming the first woman ever to race in the event. McClain redshirted in 1980 after qualifying for the women's four for the 1980 Olympics (boycott), and she later finished fourth in the four at the 1984 Olympics. She earned three silver medals at the World Championships between 1981-83 and was a member of the Women's Olympic Rowing Committee from 1974-78 and from 1980-84.

Teri McKeever (women's swimming & diving head coach, 1992-present) – Head coach of the Golden Bear women's swimming & diving program for the past 26 seasons, McKeever has guided Cal to four NCAA championships (2009, 2011, 2012, 2015) and four Pac-12 titles (2009, 2012, 2014, 2015). Perhaps as impressive, the Bears have finished among the top 3 in the country each of the last 10 years. McKeever is a seven-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year and has coached seven Pac-12 Swimmers of the Year and six National Swimmers of the Year. In addition, her swimmers have won 36 Olympic medals. At the 2012 Games in London, McKeever became the first woman to serve as head coach of the U.S. Olympic women's swim team, while she was an assistant U.S. coach in both 2004 and 2008. She has twice been head U.S. coach at the Pan Pacific Championships and is a six-time assistant at the World Championships. McKeever is a member of the American Swimming Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the San Diego Sports Hall of Fame.

Alysia (Johnson) Montaño (women's track & field, 2004-08) – A six-time All-American, Montaño captured the NCAA indoor and outdoor national titles in the 800 meters in 2007. She went on to become a seven-time USA champion in the event, starting in 2007. Montaño qualified for the U.S. team for the 2012 Olympics in London where she took fifth place in the 800 meters. A two-time Pac-10 champion in the 800, she continues to hold the school record with her collegiate best of 1:59.29, as well as the Cal indoor mark of 2:03.39. Montaño was twice named the Pac-10 Women's Track Athlete of the Year. In addition to her NCAA wins in 2007, she was third in the indoor 800 in 2006 and '08, and sixth in 2005 and third in 2006 in the outdoor race. She is a multi-time medalist at the World Championships and owns a personal best of 1:57.34 in the 800 from the 2010 season.

Leon Powe (men's basketball, 2004-06) – Powe firmly stamped his name in the Cal record book during his two competitive seasons at Cal. As a freshman in 2003-04, he was named the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and earned the first of two first-team all-conference and team MVP awards. His 9.5 rebounds per game set a school freshman record. Powe missed the next year following knee surgery and returned in 2005-06 to claim second-team All-America recognition. He was named MVP of the Pac-10 Tournament after scoring 41 points in Cal's semifinal win over Oregon and grabbing 20 rebounds in the quarterfinals vs. USC – becoming the first Golden Bear with 20 rebounds in a game since 1982. Powe led the Bears into the NCAA Tournament that year. His career averages of 17.8 ppg and 9.8 rpg both rank among Cal's all-time top 10 and he is one of the few players in school history to have averaged a double-double for an entire season with 20.5 ppg and 10.1 rpg in 2005-06. Powe was chosen in the second round of the 2006 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics, winning an NBA title in 2008.

Kristina Thorson (softball, 2003-06) – Thorson became the first Cal pitcher to be named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year, receiving the honor as a senior. A three-time second-team All-American, she was named first-team all-region as a senior and to the second team as a sophomore and junior. In addition, she was a three-time first-team All-Pac-10 choice , as well as an honorable mention pick as a freshman. Thorson tossed a pair of no-hitters during her career, vs. Virginia in 2004 (perfect game) and Oregon State in 2006. She was named Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA regional in 2004, and as a senior, she set school records for wins in a season (36) and saves in a season (5). Overall, she appeared in 53 games that year with 36 complete games and 461 strikeouts (No. 3 all-time at Cal). On Cal's career lists, Thorson ranks fourth in wins (102), second in saves (12), third in games pitched (173) and fourth in strikeouts (1,071). She paced the Bears in ERA her last three years with a low of 0.83 as a senior.

Elsie Windes Wenger (women's water polo, 2004-07) - A member of two U.S. Olympics teams, Wenger earned a gold medal in 2012 and a silver medal in 2008. She was a three-time All-American at Cal, including becoming Cal's first true freshman to earn the honor. Also a four-time All-MPSF selection, Windes ranks 10th all-time at Cal in scoring and led the Bears in scoring during two of her seasons with the Bears. In the classroom, she was a two-time MPSF All-Academic choice. Following her time at Cal, she won a gold medal with the U.S. team at the 2007 and 2009 World Championships and at the Pan American Games in 2007 and '11.

Joe Starkey, Hall of Fame Service Award - Entering his 44th season as the radio voice of Cal football this coming fall, Starkey is the only announcer most Cal fans have ever heard. He began his association with the Bears in 1975 and has been behind the mic ever since. Perhaps best known for his call of "The Play" in 1982 – Cal's five-lateral kickoff return through the Stanford Band as time expired – Starkey received the Chris Schenkel Award in 2010 from the National Football Foundation for his distinguished career as a broadcaster. In 2016, the home radio booth at California Memorial Stadium was dedicated as the "Joe Starkey Broadcast Booth." He also served as the voice of the San Francisco 49ers from 1987-2008 and was longtime sports director at KGO Radio. Named best play-by-play announcer in the state of California nine times, Starkey was inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame in 2009.
