Box Score
The 15th-ranked California field hockey team took its second straight loss Friday evening at Sweeney Field in Boston, MA against No. 8 Northeastern with a final score of 6-0. The Golden Bears fall to 8-5 as the Huskies improve to 13-2, collecting their sixth straight victory.
"I'm very excited how our team played," said Husky coach Cheryl Murtagh. "We put pressure on the ball, our defense played great, and we executed our passing game well. This is how you want your team performing at this time of year."
The Huskies came out inspired and dominated play from the opening whistle. NU's constant pressure finally broke the Bears' defense 10 minutes into play. Leigh Shea intercepted a Cal pass and dribbled toward the net. She drew two defenders near her, then slid a pass to an awaiting Dixon, who deposited the ball in the cage for a 1-0 lead.
With 17 minutes left before the break, senior Fior Arrindell collected the ball near the top of the circle after Cal goalie Kelly Knapp made a nice save on a Dixon shot. Arrindell rocketed a shot into the upper corner, inside the far post, to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
The third Husky and fourth Husky goals came off well executed penalty corners in the 27th and 32nd minutes. On the third goal, stick stop Leigh Shea set the ball for Arrindell, who passed to Dixon in the low post for her second goal. Sarah Broderick blasted a shot past Knapp to the far post after Sara Webber crossed the ball to her on the opposite field on a set play.
NU went into the half with a 4-0 lead, outshooting Cal, 10-1, and holding a 6-2 penalty corner advantage. For the game, the Huskies outshot the Bears, 24-3. Knapp stopped six shots, while NU's Emily Roy recorded one save in net.
To open the second half, senior Maureen Connelly intercepted a Cal pass and went in uncontested for a breakaway goal to give the Huskies a commanding 5-0 lead with 32:33 left in regulation.
Dixon added an insurance goal, her third of the game, with 12:33 remaining on a near duplicate play as her second goal of the game from Arrindell and Webber.
