The No. 3 Cal Bears scored early and they scored often, completing an 18-4 rout of the visiting UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, this morning at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley. Freshman driver Vince Bevins tallied season-high four goals in the victory, leading a Cal charge that featured eight different scorers.
Junior driver Attila Banhidy scratched the scoreboard just 30 seconds into the match, sparking a Bear onslaught that notched seven goals in the first period of action. Six different Bear's tallied a goal in the first period, staking the Bears to a 7-2 lead after one.
Cal went on a five-goal scoring binge before the Banana Slugs' Ben Johnson marked the scoreboard with 2:24 remaining in the third period, a UC Santa Cruz scoring drought that lasted 13:54. In that span, junior Jeff Leeper scored both of his goals on the day while Greg Panawek, Andrew Stoddard and Banhidy also found the back of the net.
John Shippy tallied the lone remaining UC Santa Cruz goal with 3:25 to play as Bevins and Pat McCann tallied two and one goals, respectively, in the final period of action. The Bears went on to win 18-4 in its highest scoring output of the season.
Goalkeepers Tim Kates and Nate Bennett combined to tally six saves in goal for the Bears, while UCSC's Scott Vaughn blocked six of his own.
With the win, the Bears improve to 10-4 overall.
