DENVER, CO -
A hat trick by sophomore Emily Edwards and two goals apiece from Laura Kado, Julianne Wu and Kelly Queisser propelled the California women's lacrosse team (3-1, 3-1 in MPLL) to a 12-9 victory over the Denver Pioneers (2-2, 2-1 in MPLL), Saturday at Pioneer Field in Denver. The game was rescheduled for today due to the inclement weather conditions Friday.
"Overall, this was a good game of lacrosse," Denver head coach Abby Burbank said. "Give Berkley credit, they pushed the fast break and capitalized. We did well with ball possession, but didn't convert as much as we could have."
The Bears led by just two goals at the intermission, 7-5, but jumped on the board first in the second stanza to take an 8-5 lead. Denver responded to close to within 8-6 when Tanya Fuchs scored the first of her two goals on the night. Dominique Cook tallied her lone goal of the day on a fast break opportunity. Cook took the ball all the way up the right side of the field and made a quick move to beat Cal goalie Eden Coelho with a grounder, making the score 9-7, Cal.
Fuchs added seven draw controls to her two-goal day and Mariana Spry led the Pioneers with eight ground ball controls. Denver got off 16 shots on goal, but Coelho stopped 11. Cal fired 18 shots on goal and Denver goalie Sarah Hazard made seven saves.
Cal will turnaround and face Colorado College at 12:00 p.m. (MT) on Sunday, March 10 in Denver.
