Sept. 21, 2002

Stockton, Calif. - The No. 5 ranked Pacific men's water polo team scored six goals in the third period to upset the No. 3 ranked Bears, 8-5, Saturday Sept. 21 in Chris Kjeldsen pool. The loss drops Cal to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Tigers improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The Bears led 3-1 at halftime, but the Tigers came out strong in the second half, scoring six unanswered goals in the third period. The Tigers' Chris Nowak led the charge with three goals in the third stanza and led the team with three goals on the day. The Tigers took the lead, 4-3, with 3:03 remaining in the third period - a lead that they would never relinquish.

Cal outscored Pacific 2-1 in the final period as senior Rob Arroyo scored his second goal of the match with 4:41 remaining, to cut the Tiger lead to four, 8-4. But Pacific's Jarrod Cruzat pushed the lead back to five just under a minute later, putting the match out of reach for the Bears.

Arroyo led the Bears with two goals, while Atilla Banhidy notched his team leading 11th goal of the season in the losing effort. Junior goalie Tim Kates played solidly in goal, tallying seven saves on the day.

The two teams are now 1-1 against each other this season as the Bears defeated Pacific, 9-7 on Sept. 15, en route to a third-place finish in the SoCal tournament. The teams will meet for the final scheduled match of the season, and third in a row, next weekend as Cal hosts the Tigers on Sept. 28 at 11:00 a.m. in Spieker Aquatics Complex.
