Bears Extend Winning Streak to Four, Drop Mt. St. Mary's, 9-7

March 9, 2003

Denver, Colo. - The California women's lacrosse team (4-1, 1-0, MPLL) extended its winning streak to four games with its 9-7 victory over Mount Saint Mary's College this afternoon, March 9 at Pioneer Field in Denver. Sophomore Molly Brady led the attack with her second hat trick of the season.

After being held scoreless in yesterday's 12-10 victory over Denver, junior attacker Emily Edwards posted her ninth goal of the year at the 28:08 mark to give the Bears the early 1-0 lead. The lead only lasted a little over three minutes, though, as the Mount's Nicole DiAngelo tallied her first of three goals at 24:43 to notch the game at one apiece. The two squads swapped scores in the next 10 minutes as freshman Leanne Zilioli found the back of the net at the 21:34 mark and DiAngelo tied it again at 14:10.

With the game tied at 2-2 it became Brady time. The second-year player kicked it into gear, recording back-to-back scores in a 37-second span to give the Golden Bears the 4-2 lead. Junior Julianne Wu tacked on another goal at the 8:46 mark to extend the Cal lead to three, 5-2. But the Mount came charging back, compiling a three-goal run of their own. Kelly Moran, Megan Fick and Kim Keene tied the game at 5-5 with 1:15 left to play in the first half. But the scoring wasn't done yet, as Cal's Colleen O'Mara scored with 26 seconds to play and Mount Saint Mary's Addie Lewis responded with 17 ticks left on the clock to send into the break tied at 6-6.

The offensive outburst of the first half became a thing of the past in the second period of action. While the two teams combined for 12 goals in the first stanza, only four goals were scored in the second half. The Mount took the brief one-goal lead with 20:41 to play as DiAngelo recorded an unassisted goal for her third of the afternoon. The Bears quickly gained the momentum, though, as Zilioli and Kelley Queisser won four of the five draw controls in the second half to maintain the time of posession. Cal took advantage of the offensive posessions, initiating a three-goal run with scores from O'Mara, Zilioli and Brady. That was all the output the Bears would need as they held The Mount scoreless for the game's final 20 minutes to hang on for the 9-7 victory.

Cal outshot the Mountaineers 36 to 19 and controlled the draw, claiming 13 of the 18 draw controls. The Bears extended their all-time advantage over the Mountaineers to 2-0.

Cal returns to action Saturday, March 15 as it challenges Saint Mary's College at 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley.
