Bears Gets First Conference Win Of 2003

Sept. 6, 2003

STOCKTON, Calif. - Cal rode down to Stockton knowing that its second game of the year would not be a cakewalk, but it did not expect to sweat out a 2-0 victory over Pacific. In a game dominated by defense and missed opportunities, the Golden Bears (2-0, 1-0 in the Norpac) were able to prevail and extend their win streak over the Tigers (1-2, 0-1 in the Norpac) to 21 games.

The Tigers played tough, keeping the pressure on the favored Bears all game long. However, Bear defenders were able to step up to the challenge, especially goalkeeper Kelly Knapp, who was able to corral nine saves in her first shutout of the young season.

The two teams exchanged missed shot opportunities in the first half. Cal missed six shots, while Pacific missed three, in the opening 30 minutes. But after regrouping, both teams came out in the second half guns blazing, increasing their shots on goal from a total of nine in the first half to 19 in the second half.

In the 47th minute, Nora Feddersen finally connected for a goal after missing three previous shots, to put the Bears up 1-0. Val Godfrid added an insurance goal with 6:12 remaining in the match, as the Bears went on to victory - improving to 2-0 on the young season.

"It was not a very well-played first half," said coach Shellie Onstead. "We were able to make the adjustments in the second half, however, to pull out the victory. I give the girls credit for getting over the mental battles of playing on grass. I was also happy to get good minutes from some of my players off the bench - it was good to see others contribute."
