Cako Edges Juricova in All-American Quarterfinal

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - No. 1-ranked California women's tennis senior Jana Juricova was upset in the singles quarterfinal of the 2011 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Tennis Championships on Fri., Oct. 7, at the Riviera Tennis Club. The top-seeded Golden Bear advanced to the quarterfinal by taking out USC's Zoe Scandalis in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6, with an 8-6 count in the third-set tiebreaker.

Juricova was narrowly edged by No. 11-ranked Jacqueline Cako of Arizona State in her third consecutive set tiebreaker. Cako came up with an 8-6 win in the first-set tiebreaker and stunned Juricova with a 7-1 win in the second-set breaker to earn the upset.

Sophomore Anett Schutting will join Juricova on court for a doubles back-draw quarterfinal at 3 p.m. PT on Sat., Oct. 8. The pair received a bye out of the first round of consolation matches and will await the winner of a 10 a.m. match between Pepperdine's 14th-ranked duo of Ale Granillo and Khunpak Issara and Virginia's ninth-ranked team of Lindsey Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra.
