COLUMBUS, Ohio -
California fell to Ohio State, 16-4, in the first game of the Golden Bears' road trip on Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Senior goalkeeper Allie Shropshire made 11 saves for the Bears, whose record fell to 5-4 after the nonconference match, while the Buckeyes improved to 5-3.
Ohio State outshot Cal, 37-12, and forced 21 turnovers out of the Bears.
"Ohio State's a good team," Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. "I think that our team showed up today but didn't do much other than show up. Allie Shropshire was phenomenal, but the teammates in front of her were unbelievably inconsistent. We struggled all over the field with draws, attack and defense. It actually was bad in the first half and was worse in the second, which was surprising. Shrop did play well, but pretty much everybody else did not have a good day. It's disappointing coming off a good effort against Navy with an effort that didn't really show what our team was capable of."
The Bears topped Navy, 13-6, on March 17 in Berkeley before heading to Ohio.
Against the Buckeyes, Cal trailed 5-0 in the first half before scoring its first goal, a free-position strike by junior midfielder Vail Horn at 14:25. Freshman Amelia Burke collected Cal's second goal at 29:29, but the Bears trailed, 8-2, at halftime.
In the second half, sophomore midfielder Megan Takacs set up junior attacker Tara Arolla for a goal at 46:35, making the score 12-3. Takacs, who led the Bears with two points, scored the last goal of the game at 57:09.
Cal plays its next three games in Pennsylvania, with its next match slated for Wednesday, March 23, at Drexel.
