BERKELEY - The ninth-ranked California women's tennis team (14-4, 6-0 Pac-12) claimed a 5-2 victory over No. 28 Arizona (12-5, 2-2) at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Friday, March 30. The Golden Bears extended their winning streak against the Wildcats to 15 matches and moved to 6-0 in league duals; their best start in conference matches since the team finished, 6-0, to win the NorPac title in 1986. Cal's eight-match winning streak dating back to March 3 is also the longest since an 11-match streak that took the Bears to the NCAA title match in 2009.
"We're enjoying playing at home," said head coach Amanda Augustus. "I think this team has learned--from earlier in the season--how to win when we have players out of the lineup. They know how to adjust and I think everyone stepped up, today. It was a good match. Arizona really pushed us, today, and it was nice to see how we responded. I think it will only serve us well as we continue through the rest of the season."
The Bears claimed their 15th doubles point of the year with wins at the top two courts. Arizona made the first move as Susan McRann and Kim Stubbe earned an 8-4 win against sophomore Alice Duranteau and freshman Cecilia Estlander. With senior Jana Juricova out of the lineup, Cal's team of junior Tayler Davis and freshman Zsofi Susanyi posted an 8-6 win at court two against Hailey Johnson and Sarah Landsman to even the race for the first point of the day.
At the top court, the Bears' 23rd-ranked team of junior Annie Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting held a 6-2 lead but allowed the Wildcats' 50th-ranked tandem of Natasha Marks and Lacey Smyth to win three straight games. Cal held serve to go up, 7-5, before the Bears broke Marks' serve in the 13th game on a deuce point to secure an 8-5 win and the first point in the dual.
Cal went ahead, 2-0, in the dual when No. 72-ranked Schutting posted a 6-4, 6-0 win against Landsman at No. 3 singles. Schutting won her 12th consecutive set and extended her winning streak to nine matches. 90th-ranked Goransson delivered a third point for the Bears when she took out Stubbe, 6-4, 6-0, at court four. For Goransson, it was her 18th straight set victory and her ninth consecutive singles win.
At the top court, 14th-ranked Susanyi won her eighth straight match when she took out No. 66 Smyth, 6-3, 7-5, to clinch the dual victory for Cal. Susanyi had to battle back from down a break, early in the second set, and fended off several break points to go up, 6-5. It was Susanyi's team-leading 29th singles win of the year.
Duranteau tacked up a fifth point from court five where she defeated McRann, 7-5, 6-3, for her seventh straight singles victory. She also extended her set win streak to 14. Arizona got on the board on a win from court six where Laura Oldham defeated freshman Laura Posylkin, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0, with a 10-7 score in the third-set match tiebreaker. It was Posylkin's first collegiate match with the Bears.
Arizona added a second point to its final tally with a win at court two where No. 81 Marks upended No. 53-ranked Davis in a third-set match tiebreaker, 10-8. Davis won the first set, 6-4, but Marks responded to win the second set, 6-4, and force the decisive tiebreaker.
The Bears remain home to host No. 27 Arizona State (10-4, 2-2 Pac-12) at noon PT on Saturday, March 31. The Sun Devils dropped a 7-0 match to sixth-ranked Stanford earlier today. Live streaming video and scores are available via links at CalBears.com.
